How many days do irish Senators "work" and does the senate sit for?

    Anyone know how many days do irish Senators "work" and does the senate sit for?

    5 or 6 times a year for an hour or so

    They verify and agree to legislation. If necessary they can delay it but they can't reject it.
    I don't think the President can even refuse to sign legislation, all she can do is refer it to the Supreme Court which is another delay

    In most republics being a senator is an important position, not in this one and you can lay the blame at Dev and his constitution

    Ya it's a very far cry from the Republic that Wolfe Tone imagined. Not really a Republic at all in comparison.

    Last full count was the 29th Seanad in 2006, sat for 71 days that year.

    The 29th Seanad also sat up to the point of the 2007 election, totaling 32 days to 24 May 2007.

    A more parasitic and utterly worthless institution in Irish political society is hard to conceive of. No informed person would defend it, particularly since the creation and development of the committee system in the Dáil from the 1970s. Useless, entirely useless. Jobs for the boys, and absolutely no more than that.
