I was in the process of upgrading my firmware to 0.9.3281 but during the upgrade process, my Azboz appears to have frozen up (only 7% progress).

According to the on-screen instructions, I am not supposed to power off the box and do a re-set, but how else am I meant to fix the problem?

Any possible cause for this, my USB key is FAT32 and has no other files on there.

Turn it off and try again. There's an emergency update procedure if it doesn't work.

Actually shouldn't it be FAT and not FAT32??

    Yeah, got it sorted.

USB key had to be FAT not FAT32, I had to hunt around for a smaller key so I could format it in FAT.

The default subtitles 'ON' is a bit of a bummer though.

You're welcome, yeah, that's easily sorted too

In 'Settings' go into 'Language/Time' and set 'Subtitle Language' to OFF.

Thanks for that tip, the subtiles were driving me mad (not really mad but you know).
Still plenty of glitches but getting there. Sometimes need to remember that this is a receiver first and a media player second.

Rumours of a new firmware to be released in the next few days too..0.9.3378. Things seem to be moving in the right direction now with frequent updates.:)

    Great stuff,
3281 didnt even make "official" release though.
Hopefully the newest on is a step closer to v 1.0

    Quick question.

1.Can you watch a previously recorded programme (from the HDD) whilst recording another (either DVB-S2 or DVB-T).

2.I also saw on another site that someone mentioned that whilst recording pressing menu stopped the recording. Was this the user being crazy or was this a previous problem.

I am looking at replacing my SKY+ with the AZBOX but need to know it is simple enough for my wife/kids to use.

    Thanks

The short answer is not yet, Sky have polished the whole 'Plus' experience over many years and many well tested firmware updates, it's going to take a while longer for the AZBox to get there. Saying that, I am in the same situation and will be replacing my Sky HD box with the AZBox.

Would that mean there would be no need to manually download the EPG?

Wont be trying this FW for a few days to see how it beds in.
I have to say, I am happen enough with the box as is for the moment so any improvements at all are huge bonus'.

Yes, I believe so, haven't tried it either myself, and all UK channels included in EPG not just Freesat

Option 4 all the way and dont forget to get yourself a dvb-t tuner. Slegs on here is the man to contact if you need any of this equipement and advice.

    To get EPG to work

Open a telnet console with putty and type:

    mkdir -p /PLUGINS/EURO_EPG

(or alternatively create a directory EURO_EPG under PLUGINS in FileZilla)

This will activate a plugin that you can use via the remote in Home - > Plugins

You can choose the Freesat or Sky EPG or both and download up to 3 days program guide at a time

Really? So you're telling me that the latest fw really works for Freesat or Sky EPG data?

This could be a big plus for Azbox

Yes, it works, its the first cut in the firmware so its not 100% (some channel gaps) but a huge leap forward. The plugin is managed via the remote.

I have requested that it be possible to schedule the EPG download to save having to download at all.

The freesat one should be on the fly. Only the sky epg should require downloading as it's based on xmltv feeds from radio times. I'm assuming that these two plugins are direct ports of the dreambox equivalents. While the xmltv epg has much more selection ESP for official sky subs, I found the CPU hit massive as it was resyncing and had to schedule for the early hours. Once the freesat one emerged, I never looked back as it works in the background off the freesat dvb epg feeds themselves

Both are downloaded from satellite transponder - it is not web/xmltv implementation. Current implementation is manual initiated download of data from the transponders to AZBox EPG.

I believe next version is to have synching when in standby.

thats cool.. I had just seen the openepg plugin for the dreamboxes that uses the sky EPG feeds directly... that was only working with Sky Italia.. but seems to now work with Sky UK. It will be interesting to see which one (Freesat/Sky) works better.

I might just buy one of theses eventually!

whats the dual-tuner support status?.. record sat watch dtt etc.

It is OpenEPG that the AZBox one based on...

Its still watch one record another only on same mux or transponder (which is good for DTT). Full dual tuner watch one record another not in firmware just yet so if you change between tuners it stops the recording.

Can anyone point me at the Irish channel list for the Azbox? I even installed windows on my mac so I could run the channel editor but I can't find the list on the saortv link.

Thanks for the help. I got rid of herself and the little one for a few days and finally got to setup the box properly. I even went and installed Windows on my Mac (sacrilege!) for all the relevant tools and finally found a tool that would upload channel lists automagically (channel lists were driving the other half demented!)

I even got my Sky card working at about 2AM last night after installing several versions of MultiCAS to find one that would actually remember my boxkey, and finally putting the card the right way up in the slot! I might actually sit down and watch some telly this weekend!

Is there anywhere I can get a satellite.xml for Sky digital. I'd like to use it on the Azbox until my sub runs out. Or is there any tool that can create one from a list in lyngsat or kingofsat (like if I select Sky digital as a provider can I turn that page into XML??)

Next step is to replace the minidish with an 80cm multi-LNB :D

Oh, and a big thanks to slegs for the Azbox. A pleasure to deal with. All his praise here is well deserved! :)

No not just yet, this is something they are working on.

It can read IP TV streams the other way though.

So say for instance could you watch a match broadcast on sopcast via the azbox to the tv?

Not sure as I haven't tried. I know you can stream from VLC on your PC to your AZBox if you wanted.

Have no idea about sopcast. Just making the point that IPTV works and if you want to stream yourself it can be done from VLC.

Only requirement I believe is that the feed is MPEG2

The DVB-T tuner is for terrestrial allowing you to receive digital DTT service RTE/TV3/TG4 over an aerial FTA. It is broadcasting in test mode for the last 15months and due to launch officially next year. This gives recordable FTA DTT and satellite FTA on one EPG in the AZbox.

Would you still need a tv with MPEG 4 to get the digital Irish channels ?

No, once you have the DVB T tuner in the Azbox you will receive them.

bad bad news on azbox. seems twin tuner support will never be and opensat who make azbox have gone back on their promise of such and now refer to it as a combo box meaning you can use it for a sat tuner or a terrestrial/cable tuner but not both together as in if you wish to watch terrestrial you cannot record sat or vice versa - same with the promised second sat tuner unable to both run at same time so you can only record what you watch. a real let down. also opensat have publicly been caught out and such and even tried to change the product description on their website but were exposed for doing so. they have also banned most members who highlighted this and have shut down their forum to new registration. hence they are now been refered to as closedsat! sad day indeed for us azbox owners. official statement and supposed new firmware expected this weekend!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 360 ✭✭cormacl

seemed a bit too good to be true with all the "twin tuner support is working but they don't want to release it until everything is ready, but meanwhile, please enjoy the other bugs" excuses.

This means that in terms of an Irish Sat/DTT PVR with multiple tuners active at once and Freesat EPG support, that you're left with the Qbox ~€500 or DM8000 ~€1000. I'm basing this on the legitimate need for 2 sat tuners and at least 1 DTT tuner. Qbox meets this as does the DM8000, the latter still having one spare slot for an extra tuner.

Some may not be bothered with this restriction, but I've had plenty of scenarios in my FTA UK/Irish/German household where we were actively recording 2 satellite programs at once and watching a DTT service or existing recording at the time.

exactly cormac. most people have this neccessity for at least two options. ie it watch sat and record sat. otherwise we may as well go back to watching rte one or two as we are been restricted in our viewing. im sure this will affect your sales too slegs mate. just a shame for you and for us that they have gone this route!

Its gone a bit quiet in here:rolleyes:...........

Not too many posts have gone without a response for longer than an hour or two, particularly from our inhouse experts..... until now....
C'mon lads. Is the Azbox dead in terms of being a proper integrated box then?

What's the point on commenting on speculation and heresay?

I see these other threads from other forums where someone says they heard that a guy said this and that...

...then it appears here as gospel.

Speculation like this seems to occur every 6~8weeks, admittedly it's not being helped by Opensat's lack of communication although they did quash rumours with a press release about 3 months back.

Every few weeks we get new firmware that improves the box no end, the box is still in development, let's wait and see what happens next...

"We might as well go back to watching RTE 1 or 2 as we are been restricted in our viewing"
What an absolute and over the top overreaction!

Not sure where the official line is on this from opensat, But here is my personal experience of the box.
    1. Didnt really get it for DTT or even Dual Tuner support-would be a bonus however.
    2. Bought it as an FTA receiver, with other options if required.
    3. Bought it with a 1 terra drive to be my primary media player.
    4. Bought it with the full knowledge it was beta and as such certain things wouldnt work and that certain promises of the makers may not be fulfilled.
    5. So far its done all I bought it for and more.
