I'm looking to get a desk built from my own design.. Is there anybody in Waterford that can do the job? I plan on building it myself but if its cheap enough sure I might as well let the qualified people at it.. It would be fairly big now as well.. about 8ft wide 6ft high & just over a foot in depth.

    Thanks.

There is a place out the cork road somewhere that might be able to help ya, I work in office supplies The company we deal with would prob be able to build something to your spec but by the time you take transport costs(they are UK based) and labour involved I would imagine you could be working towards crazy money

well.. its like a unit.. the desk itself is about 29" and there's all shelving on top of that, that goes up to about 6ft

heres something I did using google sketchup...

Try a guy called Niall on <snip - no mobiles please>. He made a very specific unit for me, to my design, and I'm very happy with it. He's in Wexford - maybe a little out of Waterford, but he was very good, and made exactly what I wanted with no problem. Your piece would probably be a doddle to him.

    What are your own skills?

I made an office desk that wouldnt look outta place in a furniture shop, I also made a coffee table with the left over wood.

I was looking to buy an office desk and at €250 i said feck that so i made my own, using mortice joints.

I did six years woodwork in school and have a back round as a hand worker building etc.

I got the wood in Morrisey's is it called? there on the cork road, the wood for the bottom and structure of the desk was 15 euro and the top half of the actual desk piece was 35 euro it was straight forward enough like!

I also made a desk in my old house in a corner like what you displayed using the chimney stack the rear wall and a side wall to sit a desk on, easy enough.

Yeah I reckon I could do it myself! Its the joints that I will have to learn.. Over the years ive built alot of desks ive bought from shops so I have a pretty good understanding off the whole job.

Im guessing I could do all the shelves with dowels and glue..? The main desk id go for those locking things.. Its like a screw in the main desk that falls into a hole on the legs and you turn a nut to lock it in place.. If that makes sense?

I think ill post this over in the woodcraft forum..

You could try Castle Furniture, in the Waterford Business Park. They mainly do commercial jobs, but I'd guess that right now they'd do anything!

Nice workmanship when I used them last year.
