Maybe this has been done to death before but does anyone else think the TD's of Dáil Éireann think about number 1 first, the party second, the country third ( if even )?

I'd think twice about putting idealists into power too. Just because someone believes that what they want is the best for the country, does not actually make it so. The road to ruin is paved with good intentions, after all.

The system of democracy that we have is based upon various checks and balances that are predicated upon the self-interest of politicians; if they fail their community and country, they lose their job.

The problem does not rest so much with them, but in the failure of those checks and balances; in us. If we fail to vote them out, or fail to vote (because we're too busy), then ultimately we have no one to blame but ourselves.

This is the thing about democracy. We ultimately allow abuse, corruption and incompetence. Or we don't. Up to us to do something about it rather than whinge.
