Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. What Point and Shoot Camera do you use?

When you're walking to work, or maybe just at a party, and you see a perfect photo opportunity, but obviously you wont be carrying around your SLR camera.

So what kind of point and shoot camera do you guys use to take those spur of the moment photos, and how did they turn out?

Canon G10, don't love it nearly as much as the G9. But the poor G9's insides fried just before christmas. The upgrade was a crimbo pressi to me, from me!! :D

    +1 for the Canon G9.

Keep it in my backpack so I can grab shots when I see them.

    love that first shot.

cabansail, why does everyone prefer the g9 to the g10? i've often thought about getting one of these as a carry around job. should i look for an older g9 instead of buying a new g10?

    thanks.

I cannot comment for everyone, but I chose the G9 over the G10 as they were both for sale at the time.

The thing I would have liked about the G10 is that the lens goes wider (28mm equiv. compared to 35mm equiv.)

What I did not like is that the G10 had gone to ~15MP, which I think is just too high a density. The 12MP of the G9 is probably too much.

    As a Nikon man, I have a .........................................Canon A 590IS as a backupcarryallthetimeinmypocketcamera.

Great little camera, cheap and cheerful, and it runs on normal AA batteries, perfect for me.

Why can't Nikon make a good P+S camera?

Have a Canon iXus 860is in my coat pocket most of the time for everyday banging around but use my G10 if I need better quality with portability. The G10 is great camera, good wide angle and RAW mode but the magenta fringing can be a bit tiresome sometimes. Have that sorted in Photoshop Raw converter so not too bad and would recommend both cameras above.

i did have a fuji finepix a500 for the last few years, it was the camera that actually got me interested in taking photos again, but it died about a week ago, just won't focus anymore, and it really probably isn't worth getting it fixed, as it wasn't even that great a camera to begin with.

I don't have one. I've wanted one for several years though, since always carrying around the DSLR just isn't feasible.

I don't want to settle for anything but the Canon G9 though, and I can't afford it.

Hi all, sorry for bumping up this thread but it's been a great help to me. I've been assigned with the task of updating our Fuji FinePix Z1 for something less head-wrecking. I have read through all your posts and see that the G9 is coming highly recommended. My question is this: Is the camera still on sale or has it been entirely replaced by the G10? I've found cached links to the G9 on sites such as Komplett, but no option to buy. If anyone has bought one recently and knows which reliable shops / sites are selling it, could they let me know? How much cheaper than the G10 is it, or should I just go for the G10 and get it bought already!?! I have to point out that neither of us are 'photographers', we just love taking snaps of our young child but usually find that the moment has gone by the time the Z1 finally takes the picture. We're also expecting number two any week now and really want to have a good, reliable camera in place when he/she arrives. Video is also a must-have for us, which is why the G range sounds perfect. I'll keep searching anyhow, but thought that seeing as you all seem to know so much about these cameras (and I pretty much know bugger all!), you might help point me in the right direction. Thanks everyone.

Hi, i think the G9 is still available in limited numbers in some shops around the country - try specialist camera stores in dublin or down the country. Where are you and I'll be able to check a few places for you?

I'm in Dublin, any help would be great! Thanks.

RB, thanks for posting that link. I've never ordered anything bigger than a book from Amazon, could that price be for real and safe?

Do you also need to order memory cards with the camera?

Sorry, the questions are starting to mount here, but you've both come back with such promising information!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,369 ✭✭✭Fionn

hey!! you want a compact camera!! there's hundreds to choose from! if its a Canon..
the Canon Powershot G series are great little cameras!
I'd say go ahead and get a G 10, if you cant get any other, the G 9 was good but is probably getting scarce now!! those in the ads might be refurbished or second user units!
You'll also need a SD Card for the camera, like for instance the Sandisk Extreme 4 gig card.
    i have the G10 and it's grand!!
    :)

I ordered a 450D, a few lenses and a few other things from Amazon.co.uk on the 16th and it arrived today, well packaged and secure.
Amazon are probably the most trustworthy online retailer, they're enormous and I'll certainly use their services again.

However, when ordering don't use their Amazon conversion rate services, pay in Sterling and let the bank sort it out as it'll work out a bit cheaper.

You do indeed need to pick up memory cards, you can get them in shops but they're cheaper online. The general advice here seems to be buy a few 2gb cards as opposed to 4gb cards so that you'll have backup should one fail while you're out and about, and you won't lose all your photos if it does happen.

I have the Panasonic LX3 - great little camera - nice and portable - quality ain't perfect - whatever perfection is - some of the best photographs I saw last year were by Tichy, who made his own cameras , utilising bog roll of all things

Amazon are reputable and this price is very good. I don't know what the postage would be but worth checking out. Bermingham Cameras had a second hand one in the window a couple of weeks ago but I haven't been in there lately and I don't see it on their website but you could try ringing them 01 6772205 to see if it's still there and how much. Having said that, it would be hard to beat the new model for £259 (€293) plus P&P.
This one is on eBay for €349, P&P included and it says new, cancelled order
    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Canon-POWERSHOT-G9-BLACK_W0QQitemZ180343779882QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=item180343779882&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1300%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
and there are others so eBay could be worth a look too. I have bought from eBay and have never had a problem. I know you hear stories on occasions but so far all my dealings have been 100% positive.

Go for a G9 or G10 by all means, if you have the funds, but if you are going to leave it set on AUTO then you may well be better off looking at a cheaper & simpler model.

The reason that the G9/10's figure so high here is that people here are looking for a compact with manual settings & RAW so they can then have the control over their images. This is not something offered by many of the compact cameras. It does, however, need some knowledge of Photography to get the better results.

The G9/10 will of course work perfectly well taking jpegs in full Auto, but it's a bit like getting a lightweight racing bike & then putting training wheels on it. You can get a much more affordable camera that will work just as well in Auto/jpeg & would suit those needs. Have a look at some of the other Canon cameras in their compact range. There is a link in the FAQ's Sticky to a Camera Selector from DPReview which may help you.

The only P&S, or even digital camera I have for that matter, is the one in my phone - a SE K750i. It is OK if there is plenty of light, but the image quality goes to pieces fast if lighting gets dim.

A couple of sample pics from it:

Damn me and my indecision! I spent too long looking around. I had the camera saved to my Amazon basket, went in this evening to go ahead and buy it and saw this:
We're sorry. The item Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera - Black (12.1MP, 6x Optical Zoom) 3.0" LCD is no longer available from the seller you selected.
The only others available on Amazon.co.uk are 'refurbished' or 'used'.

Ramerie, do you know roughly what price the camera is in Mahers? The only other ones I've seen available on Irish sites have all been for about €455.

Can someone do me a favor...I'd like to get a Canon G9 or G10 but I want a small enough good quality camera and I'm worried if its just going to be the size of a 400D or something,

Can someone take a shot of one with perhaps a 1 or 2 euro coin next to it just so I can get an idea of size?

I was in a Curry's in London last Saturday. I was looking at Lenses & Grips but had the G9 around my neck. A woman asked me if she could have a look & hold it (Ohhh Arrr Missus!) It turns out she has the G10 but now wished she had got the G9 instead. Later on in Jessops I compared my G9 with a G10 there & it is marginally bigger a slightly heavier (must be the weight of all those extra pixels)
