    So What Bobcar?

Didn't say you didn't make the 'extreme' comment -- the latter which I think is a little ill-considered and gauche.

Obviously people are rightly given a little latitude -- my rule of thumb is some-body either born in sligo, naturalised Sligonian, parents/ancestors hail from the county and/or are proud of such and in combination of all the previous has drawn some influence from the place.

Hey I'm not going to run in and say for eg Maisie McDaniel only got to No 17 in the Blue Grass Irish Charts for the year 1970s or what ever -- that's not the point.

We could mention the Duggan Brothers. The McLynns who represented Ireland in the EuroSong contest in the 1970s -- just 'cos people of a certain vintage, inclination or knowledge base -- are or aren't aware of any of these people (despite the relative levels of fame they enoyed) is beside the point.

Everyone's entitled to make a contribution without a snide-y attempted put-down. Essentially its ignornance masqurading as some form of condension in authority.

I could mention Don Patricio Milmo aka Patrick Milmoe from Ballisodare -- the most influential banker in Mexico in the C19th. I'm guessing you mightn't have heard of him but was basically the amongst the most influential business banker in Latin America. His family became married into royalty and held highly respected positions. Just because very few, aside to his existing distant relatives in Sligo, still rever his memory, and others haven't heard of him is somewhat beside the point.

So whilst you or others mightn't have heard of him (and the other examples given) -- so what? That's not the posters' problem that's yours! So just chill with light-touch patronisations.

Again, it's a Sligo-centric forum -- if you don't like the content, aren't interested/apathetic and or misinformed/disinterested, as is anyones want -- don't bother to read it.

It's hardly a topic worthy of stir up extreme emotions. Just enjoy it and inform yourself -- unbeknownst to yourself, you're acutally receiving a priviledge -- what's that about 'pearls before swine';)

shellyriver, bobcar wasn't being snide, I happen to agree that none of the recent additions to this thread are truly famous, and as a moderator of the forum I assure you he is quite aware of its status as "Sligo Centric".

Any more posts on this forum critical of its moderation will earn you a holiday from it. If you have an issue, you can pm the mods or you can create a feedback or helpdesk thread.

One that may not be too well known. John Lynch was the founder of the ITGWU in Sligo. He led the Sligo dock workers strike in Sligo in 1913 which lasted for 3 months. He was also a member of The Irish Citizens Army and led the Sligo I.C.A. Battalion which was the only detachment from outside Dublin. Republican, Socialist and Trade Unionist.

    con·de·scen·sion (kobreve.gifnlprime.gifdibreve.gif-sebreve.gifnprime.gifshschwa.gifn)
    n. 1. The act of condescending or an instance of it.
    2. Patronizingly superior behavior or attitude.

enjoyed the first couple of pages in this thread....but now it seems to be stirring up some 'extreme emotions'

These people some of us may never have heard of, but who have excelled in their respective fields, are interesting. Bring it on, I say.

dardevle, I've hopefully dealt with that.

Now let's get back to famous ring toss players who's aunt is from Ballina, and sure isn't that pretty much in Sligo anyway :P

Jeez Dardevle couldn't make the your font a bit bigger please:rolleyes: Having a bit of trouble reading it from 20 paces back!

    Definition from OED for

    Famous

    1. Celebrated (for); well known.

That's the objectively understood criteria -- not how peripheral or distant or dull it appears to a subjective reader.

You know, I'm pretty well known around these parts for banning people who ignore me when I say to stick to the topic (semantics are not included in the topic)

Seriously, Next time I won't warn 3 times.

It'll be down to 1 and then the beatings bannings will start.

Sligo, population of town 20,000ish and county another 25,000ish. We're bound to be reaching at this stage:pac:

I suppose we could rename the thread "interesting Sligo people" instead. After Neil Jordan, West...can't say it, and the Yeats family, there's not alot else one could call famous. But then lots of Sligo people don't know who Montgomery Clift or Charles De Gaulle are, but that doesn't mean they're not famous. Depends on one's interests.

By the way, if anyone has seen "Gangs of New York", an interesting note is that Sligo people had the biggest single representation of any county in Ireland living in the Five Points at that time. It was due to Palmerston and the Gore Booths financing the emigration of tenants during the famine (in varying degrees of comfort). Kerry had the second largest, due to Lord Lansdowne also financing emigration of tenants. So can we now claim Leonardo DiCaprio, Liam Neeson and Daniel Day Lewis?:D

Right, the title has now been changed to Well known people linked with Sligo
This thread received some people who may not have been born in Sligo but set up something in Sligo so to say.

Please now include people who maybe well known around these parts and state there links to the area and their "claim to fame" as some of us are still learning.

Douglass Hyde was born in sligo but it is Roscommon seem to claim him. It is misinterpreted by most people that he was born in Roscommon.

Hmm is misinterpreted even the right word! You get what i mean anyways :D

Mentioning Michael Coleman reminded me about James Morrison, Fred Finn and Seamus Tansey, all well known musicians from Sligo and very well known in the American folk scene.

And Seamie O'Dowd has a big reputation outside of Sligo. Apparently when Dervish played Rock in Rio a few years back, Seamie did a solo set in front of 250,000 people. I think it was metal band Seputura who said it was a hard act to follow on their website. You could ask Seamie, but he's too modest to tell people stuff like that:cool:

Another notable Sligoman was Billy Tamplin from Riverstown. He was a very successful endurance motorcyclist in the golden age of the 20s and 30s, competing in the likes of the Six Days in Austria, the Bol D'Or in France and other such races around Europe. Well known at the time, his achievements are lost in time at this stage.

I dont think they were big on the American "folk scene" it was more the vaudeville circuit.South Sligo is famous for tradition Irish musicans - also worth a mention is Seamies father Seamus, Josie McDermott and Paddy Killoran.

I was reading your notes on the people of Sligo and surprised and delighted to see Noelle Middleton mentioned here. Do you know is she still alive? She was a great friend of my mother's and we spent alot of time in her house in Sligo and her in our houses in London and Dublin. Any news on her would be great!
