Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Was walking along Tullow St this afternoon & noticed a florist's shop opposate the Halifax bank.
Years ago, that was where Rainbow Records used to be.
In '81 I bought my first single there. All singles were 7" vinyl then.
    Twas Souvenir by OMD.
Singles were about £1.50/60 then. The album (Architecture & Morality) would have been about a fiver.
Way beyond my budget as a 13 year old.

Anybody else have any memories about buying their first record?

First record bought for me was the Bob Marley "Legend" lp...why I dunno but I remember loving it when I was a kid.

First CD I bought was "Korn" by Korn...think that was 94.

And finally bought my first record last year "Goddamnit" by Alkaline Trio. I have three copies of this album and prefer the original cd release...don't see the big deal bout the Vinyl sound...maybe its an age thing.:D

Did Rainbow Records really used to be in there? I had no idea!

I pretty much got all my music as birthday/Christmas presents until I was 9 or 10. The first tape I bought myself was a Robbie Williams album in the newsagents in the building where Penneys is now. First CD was a now! compilation in Golden Disks, first record was a 7'' of Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds that I got in Rainbow right before it closed. (they were selling off their old stock) I miss that place... *tear*

All mine for ages were recordings of the radio. I remember loving 'killed the radio star' (can't think of the proper name of song or the band at the mo).

I used to love Prefab Sprout, Lloyd Cole etc. And listening to Dave Fanning religiously to record them off the radio.

I can't remember the first album/CD bought - it is a good chance that is was one of the Irish ones like the Stunning (love them so much) or someone like that, it may also have been Appetite for Destruction or Prefab Sprout.

Santa brought me my first ever cassette tape...Bryan Adams - Waking up the Neighbours. It came with my first ever stereo. Can't remember what year do.

Can't remember the first tape I bought myself. But the first ever CD I bought was Queen - Greatest Hits, it was a three disc compilation thingy that was on special offer in Golden Discs.

I miss Rainbow Records too...they were great for ordering concert tickets. Got me savage tickets for Michael Buble last year, I was so close I could almost smell him! :D

When you say 'tape', does that also cover computer games? Because we all remember when games used to be on tapes, right?! (seems so strange now :p)

If so, the first 'tape' I bought was a game for the Commodore 64, Rambo, in Rainbow records. I was in the Bank of Ireland with my mom one day (about 6 or 7 at the time I guess) and found £10 on the ground!!! :D I think the game was £9.99

Apart from that, honestly, the first CD I bought was Robbie Williams 'Swing When You're Wining', I like music, but I dont folow any band or artist in particular, so I don bother with albums or such, but compilations more so.

Snap. That was my first musical purchase along with The Prodigy's Experience. Yeah Rainbow started out where the flower shop is now. It wasn't always called Rainbow Records though. It was called Powerplay Records and was owned by my very good friend and boss(so he thinks ha ha). That was way back in the 80's, then Eddie and Paddy took it over and it became Rainbow. Heres another blast from the past regarding music shops, how many of you remember the Rock and Pop Shop?

first tape I THINK was Michael Jackson's Dangerous. Bought in Athy market... knock off?? NEVER!!!
I don't remember my first CD but if I had to make a guess I'd say it was Nirvana's Last Concert in Japan.
First Vinyl I still have and I don't think I'll ever sell. I bought one and got one free. It was Nirvana's In Bloom single and the single cover was printed on the record, I also got the Smells Like Teen Spirit single with it. That's just a normal black record in a cardboard sleeve though.

I loved the Rock and Pop shop. I remember my first long sleeved t-shirt. Cost £20. Again it was a Nivana top. On the back it said
    "Fudge Packing,
    Crack Smoking
    Satan Worshipping
    MotherF*ckers"

And I wore it to mass :)

many saturdays spend "hanging out" in the Rock&Pop Shop looking at t-shirts and vast collections of tapes....cringe!!

first tape was Michael Jackson's BAD, think my first CD was Smashing Pumpkins.

spent alot of my teenage years recording stuff off the radio especially Fanning's Fab 50....Record, Play, Pause!!!

Tapes: Green Day - Dookie and Radiohead - The Bends. I was 12.

CD: not sure, think it could have been The Bends as well.
