And you're going to offer boards.ie users discounts ... right?

Where in Shop Street have you bought the lease? You should probably look into other areas too, not just milkshakes just in case it does turn in to just a fad. Maybe becoming an old-fashioned sweet shop too, where people can buy those sweets separately? That's just an idea, so I don't know how well it would work.

with that kind of an attitude I can't wait to see you open your copycat business and watch it close a few months later!

makes me sick the amount of dopes who see corner shops, dainty cafes, crepe "gourmet burger" take aways, etc and think I can do that, their friends and family encourage them to throw their savings or bank loan at a business that won't last pissing time!

    get your own fcukin ideas

Yeah, it's not like the lads in the Shopping Centre invented the concept. They're just the only one. Just like chippers, newsagents etc.
It is a bit more specialised, but I think they will both get trade. The one with the best (most reasonable, best located, tastiest, friendliest) service will get more business in the end. Not saying the other folks will be super happy, but sometimes competition can give both business a boost, as more people are walking around with a product.

Sometimes it's far better to open up a shop with something that has proven to be successful rather than opening up something new, which might fail. Each has their own chances of failing and as inisboffin said, the guys in the Shopping Centre didn't invent the concept.

What I would say he has to do is to create something that separates his place from the one in the Centre.

And with that attitude you've just created a load of loyalty to the old shop. Congratulations!

No need to be so scathing, he's only got his business head on. The premise of any business is to create profit, you can be assured there aren't many businesses out there who actually put their customers before profit - the aim of shops directly in competition is always to undercut one another any which way possible to get the upper hand, so seeing the tourist factor as an advantage to a shop street location seems perfectly logical to me. I'd be happy to see another place open up to instigate a bit of competition - who knows, could even result in lower prices, better offers or more variety for us consumers? Not quite sure what you're getting at with the attitude aspect, to be honest.
    shop st location

So far so good, good impulse market there.
    bit of seating

Sounds good, wouldn't mind a place to sit while I drink my shake and have a chat to whomever if I so wished to take a few minues out.
    better quality ice cream

No problems there, could be some potentially great milkshakes to be had by utilizing different flavours or brands.
    better branding

Some people are drawn to or prefer certain brands, indeed.
tourists in summer wont even know hes there, they just head for shop street

Totally true, see no fault in capitalizing on that.

Typical Irish attitude the man wants to open a business and people give out to him.
As for people saying there is already one and that gut wont be happy:confused: has he got it copyrighted think not, screw the other business open next door to it if you like, its a dog eat dog world out there.

From what part of jconnon's post are you detecting an attitude?
He/She has only listed the features of their proposed business, which they feel will give it the edge.
Some of these points, as in seating cannot even be viewed subjectively.
Better quality ingredients, better branding and location are aspects of a successful business, that anybody should be able to appreciate.

As far as I can tell from your post, it is you who has the attitude in this discussion: You really cant wait for the OP open a new business in town and see it fail, presumable along with whatever employment and revenue it generates?

Although your supposed enjoyment of seeing these type of businesses fail is completely at odds with the second part of your post:

Here you say failed businesses make you sick, that's the total opposite of your previous statement.
    Unless you enjoy being sick?

Or perhaps you yourself were the friend or family member who themselves encouraged someone to throw savings or a bank loan at a failed business?

And yeah get your own idea's: because no one in the history of retail has ever started a business or opened a shop, selling products, or provided a service that was completely original and never offered before.

    Brilliant.

    Typical Irish attitude

Well, I'm not the least bit Irish.

I was merely pointing out that he's done a successful job of painting himself as the usurper, and the other guy as the underdog with the less flash brand and worse location.

If I still lived in Galway I'd make sure to support the old shop based on the new guy's posts here. (Otherwise I might have gone to check out the new shop to see was it better... now I'd say I wouldn't bother 'cause I don't like his attitude)

What I drew from it was less that he was the usurper and more that he aimed to offer a slightly classier experience with better variety, from a more advantageous location which he felt gave him an edge....perfectly valid business thinking, really not sure how you managed to take it any other way.

What would you have him do? Approach the current owner and ask him nicely if he could please, please open another joint in Galway provided he sign a contract guaranteeing not to encroach on his customer base nor better him in any conveivable way?

How do you think any business on the planet works against their competitors?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,085 ✭✭✭Xiney

Yeah yeah all's fair in love, war and business... but announcing your intentions to put someone out of business is generally classless.

If he'd just said he was going to offer some stiff competition and to come check it out, that he was sure to impress us... that would have been the proper attitude to put across.

The frozen yogurt place didn't last very long, wonder how long jconn's place will survive...

Best of luck to you on your venture. Nothing wrong with business and the employment opportunities it can bring. I just hope you played hard-ball with the lease etc. Good luck, looking forward to trying.

Apologies if an attitude came across

The place in shopping centre is after opening in Ilac Dublin too and perhaps elsewhere. I dont think some competiton in Galway will bother him.

The customer is the only boss at the end of the day, he can sack evryone by simply going elsewhere. Thats the beauty of competition.

In fairness, his branding is very good so I take back the better branding.

Yes, he didnt invent the milkshake concept but he was the first to open in Ireland and try it in an untested market. I think given the economic situation, that deserves respect.

I haven't read all the posts but someone commented about location and that tourists won't even notice it cos it's not on Shop Street.

I'd imagine that the rent on Shop Street is MASSIVELY higher than in the Shopping Center. Also it's not every day that a small premises on Shop Street becomes available.

they're lovely shakes I think and hope he continues to do well.

that guy shake in galway has really crashed in the ilac.he sells nothing.
all thats there is polish and we all know they spend nothen but work hard.
yet the blacks dont work at all,yet they spend their welfare quite freely.
    Such useless parasites tho

people,we have to accept these people are not equal.how come no african country apart from s africa(white influence) has created any civilisation.

go to any shopping centre now and you see fat black women walken around with their 5 kids.

Yet you saw how bad our carers are looked after. Wake up you politically correct people. Help salt of the earth irish and not these scum.

What ever happened to that lad who said he'd open his own milkshake joint on Shop St. that would be superior in every way to Shake?
