And here we go on firearms.
Kineally saying he's supporting the limiting of firearms while not infringing on gun clubs and hunters.
He believes the more firearms out there, the greater the possibility of accident or malicious use.

Mention of the 1972 ban (though he dates it to the late 60s). "Staggering proliferation" of handguns since.

Well not with that attitude ! :D

And of course they're "weapons" not "firearms".
Apparently the more out there, the higher the possibility of illegal usage.
Mentioned a case where a man entered a school with a knife - but the judge said it was a good thing it wasn't a gun he had.

Mention of the lack of consistency of the law between districts. Citing the Commissioner's statement to the PAC about not being able to issue guidelines (which we know is wrong) and that he's got to issue licences for glocks on one hand and confiscate them on the other.
And now back to saying we're about to have another Columbine or Hungerford.
And now looking to Rifles - saying that we have one rifle or handgun to every 17 people, so it's not surprising we have so many gun murders.

Wants to limit spread of firearms. The more firearms the greater the risk to life. In late 60's????? all handguns and fullbore rifles confiscated. Bullsh*t FF propaganda. Wexford to liberal with firearms. Guards HAVE to issue glock with no say as to has to get them. Columbine or Hungerford just down the road. Gun owners too careless.

In principle, he has no problem with target shooting, but with a gun comes great responsibility (hooray, Stan Lee is writing our laws...).
Mention of olympic training clubs making approaches to him and he asks the minister to keep their concerns in mind.
Reading a letter from a dublin chap, sounds like the same chap who wrote to Rabbitte, but it doesn't sound like Kineally knows what the heck the discipline is.

Kineally saying those shooting in the World Handgun Championships in Indonesia should have licences...

  • Registered Users Posts: 803 ✭✭✭tonysopprano

Now he wants us to win gold medals for hangun shooting. Super to vet use and security (safes and alarms). Says we should allow pistol shooters to compete internationally albeit the chosen few

He's happy that paintball can continue.
He's saying it's not practical to store licenced firearms in Garda stations.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Saying that we have to get crushed for the sake of preventing crime this time, as we had to be for the sake of preventing the Troubles in the 70s...

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

And he's off the firearms stuff and onto rules of evidence.

G17, I know. But it's privileged, so he could call us bunny-rapists and we couldn't sue :(

And he's the Fianna Fail chair of the Justice Committee - I would have been shocked if he hadn't backed up the Minister. I'm kindof surprised he's not been more ebullient about the 'merits' of the bill.

Less than a minute... and he's winding up.

Yeah, but the chosen few he was talking about don't own .22 or air pistols, they shoot with .38s, 9mm, .40s and .45s and they're shooting PPC1500 :D

I wonder if that detail will make it to the papers?

AO'S talking about the european arrest warrent.
You know, I'm not looking forward to what he has to say about the handgun ban :(

    Um, around 120 or so?
Blame the nuns, they taught us to touch-type on old manual typewriters because they hadn't adjusted to my secondary school going co-ed :D

AO'S still on about european arrest warrents, and how it's evil and federalist and shouldn't have been gone along with at this level or at eu level.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

And on he goes to more court rules stuff. Not firearms stuff yet.

Something on RTÉ now (including dynamic/practical shooting comment):
    Gun ownership levels unacceptable: Ahern
    Wednesday, 20 May 2009 17:22

The Minister for Justice has said the last five years has seen an unacceptable new trend in the growth of handgun ownership.

He said almost 2,000 handguns have been licensed since 2004.

Dermot Ahern was speaking in the Dáil as members debated the Criminal Justice Bill, which bans the ownership of handguns in all but very limited circumstances.

Fine Gael's justice spokesman Charlie Flanagan said he wondered how effective the new measures would be and said there should be a focus on illegal firearms.

The Justice Minister also said he intends to prohibit a form of target shooting, known as dynamic or practical shooting.

It involves firearms being used in simulated combat and he said it was undesirable activity.

Still talking about the EU stuff...

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

And now he's onto the firearms section...

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Saying that the 2006 act got it totally wrong.
Says that the provisions in this bill are practical and are just tidying stuff up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

He welcomes the provisions, but says that they won't fix gun crime or tackle gun culture. I think my irony meter just pegged at full scale...

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Says 1200 licenced firearms have fallen into the hands of criminals in recent years.

    1 minute to go.
    Back to the 'Weapons' word.
Says we should have a database of every firearm and its ballistic information...
