The Minister for Justice has said the last five years has seen an unacceptable new trend in the growth of handgun ownership.

He said almost 2,000 handguns have been licensed since 2004.

Dermot Ahern was speaking in the Dáil as members debated the Criminal Justice Bill, which bans the ownership of handguns in all but very limited circumstances.

Calls for better controls in ports to prevent smuggling of firearms (because you ship drugs and guns through Dublin Port.... )

Deputy Beverly Flynn and Minister Martin Manseregh now sharing time. Starting off saying we don't want the RKBA culture or the school shootings so hooray for the Bill....

This is as bad as Kineally's bit.
And this chap is the junior minister for Finance, with special responsibility for the sports budget...

And Manseragh stood down without Flynn speaking or going back to firearms.

TD Crawford now speaking. Starting off in firearms, saying that 30 years of gun abuse has been seen in Ireland, so control firearms, but that he supports firearms associations and their record of safety.

Mentioning how there are more pistols in one place than another, and how it's because of the ranges being in those places, not for any wrong reason.

Congratulating the Minister for leaving those who have their pistols to keep them. Says we must ensure there is not a gun culture, and now bringing up the comments of the Garda inspector that the Minister has been quoting recently (our friend from chicago). Says that we're dealing with a different situation.
Asks the Minister how many stoled licenced handguns have been used in crime.
Says he's met at length with people in gun clubs and that he's been assured that they want to work within the law.

    Crawford FG Cavan/Monaghan.

Gun culture and history of troubles. Supports sporting organisations who are responsibe, those who have them should keep them but not allow gun culture. Most crimes in US are with legally held firearms but not same here and minister should show figures. Sas minister listened to FCP and took heed, and took alot fron conference.

If you can do the job, do it. If you can't do the job, just teach it. If you really suck at it, just become a union executive or politician.

He's saying there was lots of consultation, and talking about the founding of the FCP, saying it was a good thing. Says this has satisfied many anxieties. Mentions the FCP conference last year and this year's FCP seminar. Welcomes this but encourages the Minister to ensure their activities are allowed to continue.

Mention of the Olympic standard, and how you have to start off before you get to that standard.

Seymour Crawford is speaking a LOT of sense. :)

Mentions AO'S's comments, but says it's more important to take control of the drug gangs directly. Talking about the level of gun crime. Mentions the gun amnesty McDowell ran and how it didn't work.

Emphasising that the illegal firearms are the one that need to be controlled, not the legal ones.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Saying it's also important to control the replica firearms.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Saying that replicas/airsoft can be used to intimidate people.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

    On to knife culture.

(We seem to have a lot of cultures out there that I've never heard of...)

And now he's saying that if we get a gun culture, we'll get a school shooting like in the US, and that we had a gun culture in N.I. during the Troubles.

Well, that went more or less as you'd expect it. FF TDs agreed with the Minister, FG TDs opposed some of it, if a bit half-heartedly, and Labour TDs went to town on him.

There might be more in the morning, but I think for now, we're back to the stage of writing letters of protest to the TDs (especially your local TDs and the ones on the justice committee) and the press.

    Gun ownership levels unacceptable: Ahern
    Wednesday, 20 May 2009 17:22
The Minister for Justice has said the last five years has seen an unacceptable new trend in the growth of handgun ownership.

He said almost 2,000 handguns have been licensed since 2004.

Dermot Ahern was speaking in the Dáil as members debated the Criminal Justice Bill, which bans the ownership of handguns in all but very limited circumstances.

Fine Gael's justice spokesman Charlie Flanagan said he wondered how effective the new measures would be and said there should be a focus on illegal firearms.

The Justice Minister also said he intends to prohibit a form of target shooting, known as dynamic or practical shooting.

It involves firearms being used in simulated combat and he said it was undesirable activity.

He's not the brighest button in the box, he's fixated on legal guns.

Is our windsurfing Minister aware of how many people drown each year?

Is he going to ban water?

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Ironically if Baron Shorttarse and the IBA want to keep operating in the Minister's constituency, they can - they just have to use airsoft or paintball. They don't even have to pretend it's a sport :(
