i've made the same mistake in the past in my judgment of him.

utd are a totally different prospect with him in the team, to the point which i'm not sure they'd be top of the league or in the Champions League if he hadn't been there.

he's been different class and it's a travesty he wasn't in the PFA shortlist.

    and i'm a Pool fan.

As much as it pains me, i agree - now, if only he was born red as opposed to blue...

Because its absolutely bizarre not to have a single player from the top club in the country in the 11.

I don't think this is what DSB was trying to instigate. It was probably more of an observation that your man without the United players had somehow overlooked them by attempting to make a team with one one player from each team.

Or else a very valid observation that there isn't one player from the team currently at the top the table. I don't think anyone is going to honestly debate that Beattie is better than Rooney or Ronaldo, or that Cahill is better than Vidic or Ferdinand.

And I'm saying all this as a Liverpool fan who naturally isn't exactly fond of United to put it lightly :P

I take both your and PHB's point, mine was not about the valididty of the argument but more why does everything go back to utd or pool. Sorry but it was just an observation. It happened in the Roy Keane thread as well with Rafa brought into it.

BTW I am still looking at my team, Friedel will be in it though.

Why are people putting Essien in their teams? He's played SFA this season. I would like to hear the reason(s).

Well I said it wasn't based on purely on form or performances this season. And IMO Essien is one of the very best defensive midfielders in the world when fit so I wouldn't argue much with his inclusion (although I didn't put him in my team).

Essien is a beast, i wouldnt even say his best position is dmf and he is still the best dmf in the world imo. When he was with lyon he used to play box to box and he used to chip in with a good few goals as well as tackling everyone and anyone. Great player.......

I wish people would get this out of their minds... he's played there a max of 5 times for Chelsea. Mikel is Chelsea's DMF, or even Ballack. Essien is CMF!

I know what you're saying he has an engine and gets up and down the field a lot, a box-to-boxer and therefore more of a CMF than a DMF. But what I mean is that a lot of the work he does is off the ball and this is why people are putting him in their team. He is not a holding midfielder, you're right. 'Defensive' probably wasn't the right word to use, but what I mean is that people are putting him in their teams as a ball-winner, a tracker-backer, someone to add balance to their midfield that includes players like Gerrard, Fabregas, Lampard.

In a team like Lyon I would accept that Essien played more of a creative, offensive role, but in top teams like Chelsea or these fictional XI's we're coming up with, he is being looked at more for his off the ball abilities, athleticism, stamina etc...

I didn't mean to class him as a 'defensive' midfielder (as in Makelele), but as a player performing predominantly defensive roles in the team if you get me.

Mascherano gets up and down the field a lot too but is largely described as a DMF. I see Essien as a less extreme version of Masch in this respect.

Well I couldn't be bothered trying to pick a team. The one thing that does stand out to me though is that nobody is picking Tim Howard as goalkeeper.

He has been outstanding this season.

As for the rest, sure lets put all the old guys in there to make them feel good.

hmmm, I think the problem with picking Howard is you don't get the option of picking Arteta, Cahill, Jagielka or Lescott. Schwarzer is pretty much the clear favoured pick because he is a top keeper, and the only other Fulham player I'd consider picking is Danny Murphy:)

Just so everyone knows. Michael Essien has played 90 minutes three times this year.

The amount of people that have him in "team of the season"
