Reinstalled MAC wont recognise old Ipod

So i have a mac ibook g4...i used to have it synched with my ipod.. reformatted the ibook and when i connect the ipod its not being picked up in iTunes, well it is but everytime i play a song its removed from the ipod.. i cant see the 20gb or so of music and movies that i have on the Ipod in finder etc.. Any help would be…
