    well worth a gamble

an Owen and Ashton partnership could be very interesting

Is this a case of two injury plagued strikers adding up to one fully fit one?

Dunno if anyone reported this but Boro have signed Mark Yates from Colchester.

Decent left winger, great passer of the ball and good set peice delivery, not the fastest player in the world but likes running at players all the same.

interesting, would indicate that they expect Downing to move, but with him being injured til Sept/Oct (i think) it will be hard to off load him in this transfer window, maybe.

Well, yeah, or Adam Johnson, Yates has played on the right as often as the left, tow footed.
I think he prefers the left though.

how the hell could Heinze be even considered for the Chelsea defense?

He won United's player of the year in 05 didn't he? It's possible that in a decent defence he could still be fairly useful (having a full back who actually defends is a handy enough commodity)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭Smegball

Heinze is pure muck now though.

his positional sense was awful, even during that good season he had, and he tends to lunge into tackles far too much. The main element to his game that season was his really really high work rate, which proved unsustainable in the long run (going by the amount of injuries he picked up in the aftermath). Not to mention he was covered an awful lot by the pace of Ferdinand.

    Van Nistelrooy to Blackburn?

    Blackburn eye Van Nistelrooy move

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce wants to bring Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy back to the Premier League.

Allardyce is looking for a new forward after the departures of Matt Derbyshire and Roque Santa Cruz this month.

And, after persuading Nicolas Anelka to join him at Bolton in 2006, Allardyce believes the former Manchester United forward, 33, can be tempted by Rovers.

"Who'd have thought Bolton would get Anelka? Nobody," he said. "It would be a major coup if I could pull it off."

Van Nistelrooy spent five seasons at Old Trafford, scoring 150 goals in fewer than 200 games over five seasons.

The Dutch striker moved to Real in the summer of 2006, but he has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu following the Spanish side's signings of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo in recent weeks.

And Allardyce has money to spend after selling Santa Cruz to Manchester City for £17m and Derbyshire to Greek side Olympiacos for £3m.

Van Nistelrooy, who is also thought to be a target of Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, is rumoured to be available for £1.5m.

However, Allardyce conceded that the his wages could prove a stumbling block.

"The sort of salary he would be on at Real Madrid may be beyond us," Allardyce said.

"But maybe he wants to come and play in England again and take less of a salary - then we'd be interested."

Meanwhile, Allardyce has ruled out a move for Michael Owen, who he managed at Newcastle during the early part of the 2007-08 season.

The England striker's contract expires at the end of June and the 29-year-old, who is available on a free transfer, has made it clear he wants to leave the Magpies for a Premier League club.

However, Allardyce said: "I just question the injury scenario.

"I need a striker that's going to be available for 30 games next season. That's not happened for Michael over the last four years."

It'd be a major coup, but just can't see it happening. I've nothing but love for Ruud, it'd be great to see him back in the Premiership.

    Why?

He's won all that can possibly be won at Barcelona, why not go for a nice payday?

Because he's still at the top of his game. That'd be my reason anyway.

Well barca clearly want to keep him,and next season will be the biggest test to barca with real madrid galacticos, and barca have a chance to be the 1st team to win the cl twice in a row(current format)

If they want to keep him then they wouldn't be moving for David Villa. It's clear if one comes, the other will leave.

    from what I understand

barca want to keep eto'o but if he moves on villa is the top target

see that's why ill loose respect for eto'o, he's only going to city for the money

They do want to keep him but he is demanding the kind of contract that only City could afford.

since when have Barca wanted to keep him?

they spent all last summer trying to flog him and the indications are that nothing has changed.

of course they are saying they would prefer to keep him in the media, but how could they not?

    summed up well here;
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/jun/28/manchester-city-bid-samuel-etoo

if Barca get their targets they will keep their fire roaring next year, happy they are looking at a left wingback - Fillipe Luis

No it doesn't. That would just mean the shareholders and owners would make more and the players less. They should be paid whatever they deserve and if they help make the company a huge profit then they have every right to the wage.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,291 ✭✭✭eclectichoney

If City get Eto'o, will they still really be interested in tevez?

I mean RSC & Eto'o is surely enough to strengthen their strikeforce, and Tevez couldn't deal with any rotation (which I a sure would be inevitable). That leaves Chelsea left for tevez, or maybe he'll run out of options in England??

It might also mean TV rights cost less, hopefully leading to cheaper subscriptions to Sky and ESPN, cheaper tickets for games (and more bums on seats), clubs not releasing three new kits every year etc etc.

Whatever way you look at it, salary and transfer costs are linked to price inflation within the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,792 ✭✭✭✭JPA

Let's be realistic, City are a freak show.
Most other clubs pay wages they can afford, (if they are run properly), the 2 or 3 clubs willing to pay these extreme wages are the exception.

But people are willing to pay the price of tickets buy those subscriptions and kits. Now the clubs know that do you really think they would lower their prices and lose profits for no apparent benefit?

Name a club where the owners are taking large amounts of money out of the club.

Mate, owners dont take money out of a club afaik, most owners are billionaires and they see owning a club as a play-thing.

    You sure about that?

Setanta couldn't get their 1.9m subscribers.

I personally know a lot of people who've let their Spurs season tickets go over the last few years because of rising costs.

Hell, there were loads of United STs going this year.

Demand is finite, why do you think the PL is looking to the Far East to expand the "brand"?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's completely illegal. That's what Cecchi Gori did with Fiorentina and he got arrested for it while Fiorentina got bumped down with Bankruptcy

I really get a bad taste in my mouth from people whining about Man City's attempts to sign big name players.

The new owners have shed loads of money and are looking to build a new soccer dynasty - player's have every right to be excited by and want to be a part of such an endeavor.

There was a time when Man United, Barca, Madrid et al had no so-called "history" but they went and improved themselves. Why in the world should City not use the resources available to them to attempt to improve themselves to the same level? Is it too late for new clubs to attempt to create their own history? It's sour grapes and elitism at its very worst imo.

Agreed - the world of football, like every professional sport is dominated by wealth. The only way teams can compete with the Premiership top 4 is by spending millions - there is no other way. If the owners of a team want to spend 1 billion on players - good luck to them, its their money.

Havent seen it repeated as they do usually with all their stuff but apparently Sky had an agent on earlier talking about a number of players including Miguel Veloso who he said would be in England next week to talk to a number of clubs, he suggested these clubs may be City, Arsenal, Villa & Bolton.

might be rubbish though as those clubs are very easy to link him to, Arsenal need a DM, Villa need a Barry replacement, City have money and are linked to everyone and Bolton have failed before to sign him. Still id like Villa to sign him even though i do fear he may be living off the reputation he earned a few seasons ago seing as Lisbon want rid and Bolton seem to have been the main team linked previously whilst he had before been supposidly followed by teams like United

    Eto'o.

What a charming man! Says it all really, If he goes to Citeh it sure is not for the want of actually winning anything.

Samuel Eto'o wants a £12.5m signing-on fee to join Manchester City. The Barcelona striker has already been offered wages of £250,000 a week by the Eastlands club.

Or the Cameroon striker is looking for a £15m golden handshake from Barcelona otherwise the move to City is off.

A year or 2 ago and none of these guys never heard of the team and now, its like... $$$$$$$$
