Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A midfield pairing of Barry and Ireland with Roubinho working off them will be trouble for any team they play.

I imagine it would be more along the lines of:

    xxxxxxxxx
    --Robinho
    Ireland
    SWP--
    Barry
    DeJong

    or maybe:

    xxxxxxxxx

    Robinho
    SWP

    Barry
    Ireland

    DeJong

City are going to end up with a squad of 40 players soon enough.. I am trying to figure out the type of players that they are after.

seems to me they are after all the players utd, liverpool and chelsea want :p

Let them do the scouting and just offer more money :) seems like a reasonable solution ;)

This is after appearing in the BBC rumours section:
Former Portsmouth manager and Arsenal legend Tony Adams has admitted on talkSPORT radio that he is close to becoming the new Celtic boss after entering into talks with the club.

    WOW, I didn't expect this

Yeah sorry my bad, I got it on the re-read.

All the excitement is getting to me :o

SSN reported that he himself said if Wim Jansen was appointed Director of Football or some such, he will get the manager job. In the same report they stated that Wim had no interest in returning to Celtic.

Will be surprised if it's not Martinez.

Sam Allardyce has made his first foray into the summer transfer market wtih the capture of Elrio Van Heerden.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,909 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

    Sorry but who?

    (Genuine question)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,008 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Elrio Van Heerden, South African International. I put an interview up with Big Sam in the Rovers thread about him. I've also watched some youtube footage, they guy can play anywhere in midfield, but from what I'm getting from Blackburn, Big Sam is hoping he will be challenging for a spot on the left or maybe make himself a place as an attacking midfielder. I don't know much more about him myself either but he is likened by the boss to Pienaar. I will be glued to every Confederations cup game that South Africa play now.

Fantastic signing for them, great coup by Hughes, a real statement of intent taking him off a team that is above them in the table

The pool had 18m turned down for him last year, now he's gone to city for 12m.
Worse depreciation than a brand new <insert American car manufacturer name>

nope Villa wanted 18m last year and turned down 16m i believe. his contract now would be half as long yet Villa still got 2/3 of his valuation from then even though hes older now. Its a good deal for City and Villa (if we can replace him).

also what a deal financially for Barry if what i read on another site is true about a 5yr contract.

    £100,000.00 x 52 weeks x 5 yrs =

    £26M!

Minus 50% tax, provided it remains the same :)

still a massive amount of money though

being reported on Spanish radio that Real have signed Kaka for €65,

this in turn reported by Sky Sports News,

double negative might just make it positive :D

Great signing for Man City. I can't help but feel Villa should have held out for more though.

Ah yes Gareth Barry. The man who said he wanted to leave Villa for Champions league football and then signs for Man City. Also lol at Villa selling one of their top players to a direct rival for 4th,5th,6th place next season :pac:

So you are saying that there is no chance that City can actually jump into contention next season even with all their megabucks? Is that right?

You tell ;em eagle eye, he's a loose cannon with everything to prove but your setting the record straight, pew pew.

I don't think anyone is saying that - but based on this year where Villa looked in contention for champions league football, they are not a poor club either you may or may not know. Oh and they actually will be playing in Europe this coming season.

I didn't tell anybody anything, I just asked questions.

My own thoughts are that they need a top notch CB and cover, another holding mid for cover and Tevez. That would do it imo. Some people are talking about an out and out goalscorer, they don't really need that if they get Tevez, between him and Robinho they would rip defences apart and Ireland as well.

has a club ever gone from midtable to contending for the league in one year?

Loads of them, most recent would be Newcastle. Aston Villa comes to mind.

a quick look at premierleague.com would show that Newcastle actually came third 2 seasons before they challenged for the league.

You asked a question and you got a good answer. They also finished third on their first season in the Premier League after being promoted the season before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,153 ✭✭✭everdead.ie

I think its a bit unreasonableto expect them to win the leaguewith all the new players the team will take time to gel but they would need to be challanging for the top four which spurs did went from 10 to 5th missing out on final day of the season to early to make any predictions imo tho

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭Fromvert

Going from 10th to 5th is not that much, but to go from 10th to 2nd and id say within 5 points of the champions takes a lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭Fromvert

Yeah but they still dont have the pulling power required to get the top quality player required to win the league. Imo it will take them another season before we see City break/challenge the top 4.
