Which mic for the 5D MkII ... a gear thread I never would have predicted

This is definitely a "which piece of kit" gear thread I never thought I'd be asking but here goes -

Has anyone purchased and external mic for the 5D MkII ?

Any recommendations or experience?

I'm thinking general use ... though a directional one is also tempting ... I'm not looking for XLR input performance ... just a normal mini jack direct connection ... I also want one that mounts in the hot shoe ...

A bit of Googling has thrown out a few recommendations including this Rode one ... but it looks too big and I'm concerned it will appear in wide angle shooting ...

Also have recommendations for this Sennheiser

Good thread, I'm thinking of buying a stereo mic for my 5D II, besides the above is there any medium budget ones available in Dublin?

Not a bad question! I haven't got a 5Dmk2 but would be looking at getting one or a 7D and am interested to know would anybody have any recommendations on a decent one for capturing decent coverage of a sports match? Along the lines of Leinsterman, I would have in mind a mount for the hotshoe too!

I've been thinking of getting a good mic too. The built-in one is useless. Here's a link to Vincent Laforet blog about this very subject. Essentially he says to record the sound independently. :pac:
