Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can't say which is best unless you ouline the purpose of the OS, each has their own strengths and weaknesses.

As for ease of use, probably Linux, but that depends on the individual user as well.

    Answer: It depends.

What do you want to do?

I'd suggest if you aren't able to ask a more specific question then Linux will almost certainly the right answer for you.

    Linux.

The main UNIX alternative, Solaris has a questionable future. And if you can get HPUX or AIX to run on your core2duo i'll give you a million euro*

    *May be fallacy

    How about OpenVMS on a core2 duo?:pac:

Really, (at least for coding) any 'UNIX-like' system should
    do fine.

Remember Linux is a mostly POSIX compliant system
which in plain English means any Unix-like system is bound
to be more similar than not, at least in terms of API's
    and utilities.

Unix is an ideology more than just a version of a specific operating
system. I would pick Linux purely because of good community support.
Linux has good momentum when it comes to new hardware support too.

For average users, the only reason for deciding between a 'real unix'
is either down to the userland preference(ie the GNU or BSD tools).
Some operating systems don't have features like ZFS available to others etc.

Is pure Unix still around? or even available? I'm not sure it's free either if it is. Thats why Richard Stallman created GNU, that later became Linux. It's a Unix-like system, thats free unlike Unix, that was not. So the answer to your question is Linux is better because its free software, Unix is not. Another question is, why is this forum still called Unix?

Not really my cup of tea anymore tbh :pac:

I much prefer operating systems that are STABLE, and not complete
resource hogs when it comes to precious main memory.

I also like being given to the option of surfing the web/*cough* , and
not getting hammered by a VB script written by some 12 year old:D

Give Unix-like systems a shot. Even If just of of pure curiosity.

That's a rather blinkered view of the world. Solaris is freely available be it:
    Solaris 10
SXCE -- Nevada what could become Solaris 11
OpenSolaris -- Indiana basically Nevada with GNU bits added on in default paths etc. and the majority of the closed source bits removed (apart from those that are freely redistrubitable)

Even running Opensolaris though when you change your path you can have a system that uses very little in the way of GNU coreutils etc. After all GNU ls doesn't and will never support ZFS ACL's

This is the main reason Solaris ls is getting GNU flags added to it.

"Freely available" does not necessarily mean completely free to use. Use of Solaris is governed by complex and restrictive license agreements:

Licensing Policies Regarding the Solaris Operating System.
Solaris Operating System - End Users:
    http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/licensing/policies.xml

Use of the Solaris operating system is also governed by the terms of the Sun Microsystems Software License Agreement (SLA):
    http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/licensing/sla.xml

OpenSolaris has a free software license:
    http://opensolaris.org/os/licensing/opensolaris_license/

But this license is incompatible with GNU GPL and therefore not recommended by the Free Software Foundation (FSF):
