Ah cool I was wondering if you would need your own substation there for a while, I work mostly with unix lately and so I invested in powerful PC with a fair bit of memory and I run my test machines under Vmware it's very handy. Must get around to Zen, KVM etc.

I keep thinking SBS 2003 is going to be some use but everytime I set it up the server is hardly on for more than a couple of hours before I change my mind, can't really do much with Windows 2008 Server yet as I dont have any 64bit hardware.

    However.....

After deciding to get my head around ISA Server I set up ISA Server 2006 on an old home built headless athlon XP +2000 slimline desktop PC with an 80GB HDD and a Gig of RAM. That was about 6 months ago and I've been using it as the hub for the home PC system ever since. The ISA server is standalone with no domain and is also my DHCP server.

So most of the time there are 3 PC's switched on that connected to the internet via the ISA Sever and I have "almost" complete control over what my 16 yo son logs on to, was fun gettting NWN running. Nearly forgot there's an network printer (HP Jetdirect) and a separate Wireless subnet on the ISA server which I use with a laptop and an Ipaq which is also used sometimes with the TS client to control the ISA Server.

...... and theres still a server with Win SBS 2003 sitting on the desk here I haven't switched on in the last 6 months.

Quite true, but apart from having SBS versions of 2008 in mind when I wrote that (all 64bit afaik) I couldn't be bothered messing with a demo/training version of E2K7.

its a real pity, AS I dont have any 64bit hardware yet either!! it will take a few years for people to start throwing it out!!

    I have a hugh selcetion of decent HP pc#s P4 3.00 with 2 and 4 gig ram !!

Would love some decent 64bit hardware!!

You can have fully working 32 bits version of Exchange 2007 no problem.
It is just not supported by Microsoft for a production environment.

Any basic dual core would do mate.
You just need to have a Motherboard/Bios that supports hardware-assisted virtualization

Don't have it now but in my folks gaff (4 Bedroom house) about 3 years ago I had a great setup.
Basically we were all into computers plus I work for IT in a company so had access to oldish gear.

At the peak of it all I'd 20 computers on my network (all at the same time).
Worth noting that we had a shed at the end of the garden with a few sofas and some good space in it for the gaming LAN!

    Broke down as follows:
5 x Desktop PC's (one for each of us)
    3 x Laptops
8 x Dedicated Gaming LAN PC's running a standard template configured with Ghost Server
1 x PC dedicated as gaming server for Gaming LAN PC's
1 x TV under telly for playing stuff
    1 x File Server
1 x Old Xbox to make up the even 20 :)
