Holiday cottage yards from beach,walking distance to restaurants/pubs west coast Mayo

We're looking to rent a holiday cottage in the West coast of Mayo in early september for a week for our honeymoon. We've got 2 small kids so want to be close to a really nice beach(within 10 min walk ideally!) but would also like to be able to walk to a fairly decent restaurant or pub that does food so we can have 1 or 2 drinks without worrying about driving.
Can you suggest a suitable area and I'm sure we'll find some accomodation on the internet , though if you know the exact property please feel free to suggest that also.
Any suggestions appreciated as we've never been to Mayo before!

IMO, Louisburgh would be one of the nicest "holiday" spots in Mayo. Way nicer than Achill, and a good centre for touring around Connemara also. http://www.louisburgh.mayo-ireland.ie/LouisHC1.htm

Old Head has one of the nicest beaches in mayo with holiday homes right on the beach. Very calm bay perfect for kids and close to Westport/Louisburg for restaurants etc.

Plenty of holidays homes/cottages in Louisburgh.

We're not 'Proper' tourists though as we're both Irish but living abroad.
Anyway thanks for all the suggestions so far.
It would be nice to get some really detailed info like 'Old Head' beach is 1 km from some Restaurants/Pubs and there's some holiday homes in between. etc

Ok, with regards Old Head Beach

But of course you do also have in Carrowmore beach which is slightly West of Louisburgh and about 1-1.5km from Louisburgh. Just a very open beach, not as nice as Old Head.

Old Head itself has chalets, mobile homes and this caravan park. It has a wee shop and that.
Restaurants and pubs are in Louisburgh or you can go to Westport, 16.5km away

Further on from Louisburgh you have Silver Strand or Carrowniskey, both excellent for long walks and surfing.

Closer to Westport you have Bertra Beach

Here in Murrisk you also have holiday homes and have a restaurant called The Tavern and the famous Campbells pub for a nice pint. (The decor is *cough* not great )

Worth going there for that alone.

Thanks very much that's really useful.
It'll be the first week in September when we get there so I guess a sheltered beach would be preferable to one that's quite exposed.

Anybody got any info on the beaches on Achill, or indeed Achill in general?

Regarding Achill, there are loads of holiday homes for rent on the island close to Keel beach. There are a couple of restaraunts in Keel itself Achill Cliff House and Calveys and also a Chinese. If you have a car you can drive and explore the island that way.

Also, the hotel in Mulranny have holiday homes and 2-bed apartments for rent. You are a 5 min walk to Mulranny beach over a causeway (really beautiful). The advantage with the hotel is if the weather is bad you can use the leisure centre and hotel facilities. The hotel does bar food and has a good restaraunt but the pubs in the village dont do food.

we rent a house in killeen every year, just 10 minutes further out the road from louisburgh. It has the most fantastic views and has all the mod cons. Access to all the beaches is easy by car and you can walk to silver strand opposite, exposed but fantastic. Drive to the end of the coast road approx 10 minutres for a sheltered beach that is als fab, after dadreen.

ring vivian on 087 , but I would say you would have to be very lucky to get it as she is usually fully booked for the season by repeat business.

byw have a nine years old and a 2 year old.

Horseriding and cinema in westport as well as lots of other stuff if its raining. We do self catering and only buy in the ice cream cones

Louisburgh is just what you want. Loads of houses within walking distance. One really good restaurant. Nice pubs, some do ok food. A cafe. Carrowmore beach a bit windy, but Old Head is just a short drive. A fun ice cream parlour in the caravan park there.

Westport is dead easy to get too when you want somewhere different.

My favourite cottages are the traditional cottages out past the library/museum I think they're pricey, but really cute.

And for rainy days, lots of, the library...
