How can I test my water for hardness?

There's no question that the water in my supply is hard, but I've had a softener since building 3 years ago, and now lately the water in the house appears to be hard (scale in kettle and on iron, and my skin in bits after a shower). I always have salt in the softener and the backwash cycle seems to work fine when tested.

Has anyone had a softener that stopped doing its job while appearing to be ok??

Oh yeah, and is there an over-the-counter instant test for hardness?

    Many thanks.

Not sure where you would get a test kit ,but I found something online that looks straight forward to use

All you need is to measure calcium and magnesium ,I have an electronic equipment myself but its for certain Ph levels.

Thanks yoshy. I enquired, and if anyone's interested, this is the cost. Bit too pricey for me, especially postage - from Dublin!

Water Quality Test Strips 5-in 1 covering 50 tests for Free Chlorine, Total Chlorine, Total Hardness, Total Alkalinity and pH.

    Price € 24.30

Carriage € 25.00 for purchase order value under € 150.00

    Prices are exclusive of VAT.
