This may be a realy stupid question but here goes.
Iv been following the thread bout shopping in the north.
Anyway same shop in the north cheaper than south.
So my question is, if a shop in the south is displaying a sterling price
and a euro, are they not obliged to take either sterling or euro.
So lets say im in dunnes and they have a sterling price can i not pay in sterling if i want.
In the north you can pay euro for stuff in some places so why not the same down here.
Anyway sorry if it a silly question, im just curious.

    Short answer - NO.

The legal tender in the south is the Euro. A trader may accept sterling but it is at his discretion.

For the record, some shops in the North accept Euro because they want to - they are not obliged to do so, and they can set whatever rate they want.

As already stated some shops may accept sterling but thats down to the shops policy, legally they do not have to...anybody who states that they do is a muppet and is misinformed

    At current exchange rates.

Similarly, a store in the south may accept sterling, but they will (and should) convert it into euro at the valid exchange rate and then charge you the euro rate.

Though if you want it changed, it has to be exvhanged in the costs element too, so please ask your employer to pay you the sterling equivalent for your position. - Example, In the case of jobseekers allowance this is €69 in the UK & €204 in Republic.

It is silly becuase you didn't even bother to sit back and think about it. Dual pricing has been around for DECADES, look at books & magazines, if you could pay in any currency displayed people would rarely pay for magazines & books in euros.

Dual pricing saves manufacturers on labelling, packaging, admin, distribution etc, so if they are working on fixed margins you get the product cheaper. The companies who now employ people to remove such prices will pass those employees wage costs onto YOU.
