Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Pick your World XI.... (read the OP properly)

Pick your World XI, but one stipulation...

Only one player from each country, so no Kaka and Ronaldinho, and no Torres and Xavi etc... Only one Argentinian, only one Italian etc...
Only put players in positions they can realistically play.

You know the drill, same as the Premiership XI game already posted. Probably a bit less interesting this time as there is probably more to choose from as well as the odd country who only has one world class player, so these World XI's will probably be considerably stronger than the Premiership ones.

    Here's my team:

    Buffon (Italy)

    Alves (Brazil)---Vidic(Serbia)--Touré(Ivory Coast)--Zhirkov(Russia)

    Gerrard(England)
    Essien(Ghana)

    Messi(Argentina)
    Ronaldo(Portugal)
    Ribery(France)

    Torres (Spain)

Obviously a very attacking team but I would ask Gerrard to play a deeper role and act as a playmaker taking the ball from defence. Essien would serve as my ball-winner, playing a more defensive role than he might be used to as well. The front 3 attacking midfielders are all wingers but are definitely skilled enough to interchange and play in any of the 3 positions. Choosing Torres excluded a lot of other class Spanish players but I believe he is the most complete, most dangerous striker in the world so I wanted him as the spearhead. Toure and Vidic would complement eachother at the back I feel - Touré would provide the pace and athleticism to sweep up behind and Vidic would be the ball winner, the tough-tackler. Buffon has probably been the best goalkeeper for the last 10 years or so and there's no other Italy players screaming out as obviou picks so I had no qualms about using up my Italy on him.

Not sure about my whole team but you'd have to include Vidic, Arshavin, Essien Drogba and Cheh/Given to get max potential out of all the nations.

IMO Cheh is better than Given - he's just going through a rough spell.

    Cheh
    Alves - Vidic - Gallas - Grosso
    Essien
    Gerrard - Xavi
    Messi
    Arshavin
    Drogba/Eto

Enough attacking potential but lots of tracking back as well.

IMO team with those three in midfield would be practically impossible to beat(unless you're playing Man U away and make a fair challenge in the box:D)

f**k me, not 1 brazilian player. maybe Kaka instead of gerrard, but no... gerrard is super player #1! put lahm at LB and alves at RB? but i like evra as a player :/
xavi essien and gerrard as a midfield 3 is pretty much the best you can get in the world right now. ronaldo messi & eto'o would make all defences wet their pants and the sheer pace of that attack would be enough to run down opponents. vidic and nesta would get on like peas and carrots

Jesus don't start this one up again...!

Kind of surprised with the frequency that Evra has appeared in teams. He's been pretty poor from what I've seen and heard this season. He's great on the ball but he got done several times by Lennon in the Spurs United game. On last seasons form he would be worthy but I have some doubts about him defensively after some of his showings this year.

Might take some stick for this but I don't believe Given is really worthy of a place. Cech would be my choice if you didn't want to use up one of the bigger nations on the GK.

Every team posted so far has been scarily good, there's probably too much to choose from to really make it interesting

If it wasn't for Arshavin's form over the past year and a bit I would have taken Akinfeev as my goalie. He's quality

Havn't seen him enough to judge but yeah I've heard good things and he looked solid in the Euro's.

I just feel that Cech has proven himself at a very high level, although he has had the odd blip lately and there is a debate that he is not the same goalkeeper following his head thing. I still think he's good enough though.

True. The one thing I'd say is that a few people are going with something like:

    Messi - Kaka - Ronaldo
    ----Torres - Eto

Any team with that many players that don't really track back would be suspect when they come up against a well organised tough team like Liverpool or Chelsea.

Gerrard for Kaka would change it a bit but IMO you don't need all those amazing attackers. Messi, Ronaldo and one of those strikes would be enough to break down any defence....a lot of times.

Good point you need a balance. Gerrard can certainly play that centre midfielder role effectively, despite the fact he's been used as pretty much a striker for most of this season.

And you certainly didn't offend me with that comment I'm a Liverpool fan:D

Just really didn't want the debate to be dragged up again!

    Maicon Vidic Chiellini Cole
    Essien Diarra

Diarra-Essien double pivot with a rock solid defensive unit to give the front four lots of freedom. Went for a physical, pacy, counter-attacking side instead of a possession based one. More exciting to watch imo.

Drogba - 12 goals in 33 games, an absolute whinger, a very dislikable person, and ok footballer, only ever had one outstanding season.

Forlan - 23 goals in 35 appearances, intelligent player, works hard, likable, has only failed to score 20 goals a season in spain once in a 5 year career here.
