Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Drum N Bass

People have been on to me to get into Drum N Bass for ages. But I have never been a big dance head being more at home with Radiohead and Modest Mouse and have no idea where to start.

Can anyone suggest something to ease me into the genre??

Just discovered La Roux "In for the Kill' and loved it. Might be a handy starting point.

    Cheers.

youtube's blocked here; what tunes are they?

the logical drum n bass progression from Radiohead begins with Squarepusher
even Thom would agree. I'm sure there's 'better' DnB out there but Squarepusher is where it started to influence Radiohead anyway.

I'd not be a fan of DnB but have been a Radiohead fan since Pablo, if ya know what I mean.

wouldn't call squarepusher "DnB" really... bit "studenty"

Most of his stuff isn't really drum and bass but he does have a few gems.

Drum n Bass? If you think that track is Drum n Bass I think you might be a tad misguided. It's more like Euro Pop

indeed he may be "studenty" and much of his stuff may not be classed as DnB as agreed by most but within the context of someone looking at DnB and coming from a Radiohead position then it's a relevant suggestion to make if for no other reasons than Radiohead cite Squarpusher as an artist they have a lot of time for and the fact that he considers himself as DNB among other things.

CM Tyranny is the man for up to date D & B, i do know some artists an tunes bt generally im not up to speed on the D & B scene these days but i do still like a lot of what im hearing, i do however know quite a lot about Jungle/D&B from it's inception in 1993/94 if you want any recommendations from then,,was actually listening to this classic earlier one of the greats.

May be on about Skream's mix of it?

Squarepusher uses breakbeats that resemble that of Drum n'Bass but i think(correct me if i'm wrong) his music would fall into the category of IDM

If i was to introduce someone to D'nB i'd recommend 'High Contrast' or 'Fresh BC'

Skream is more dubstep but I can see where the OP is coming from when the last minute or so kicks in on that mix...

Here's a new track that I love at the minute.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-k6lYgWw3o

    And an old one.

This is the type of D'n'B I like anyway. I'd highly recommend checking out some of DJ Craze's old D'N'B mixes also.

Check out DJ Andy C or DJ Mickey Finn, both legendary DnB DJ's!

If you check out their websites / myspace's etc. you will find some good, up to date tunes for sure!

    Andy C:

    Mickey Finn:

dunno about up to date now, in fairness... micky is a ****ing lovely chap but his best years were 91-95 and his recent stuff has been sewage mostly....

andy c is a lethal dj who plays some of the wackest tunes around imo, although he tends to be better on longer sets...

Difficult type of music to ease into!

Mayeb listen to the earlier stuff, Roni Size, LTJ Bukem.

I got a 3 volume compilation called Weapons of Mass Creation.
I love it for DnB, it's my type of mix of DnB anyway, check out one of them and see what you think.

    get out.

breakbeat.co.uk get there podcast.... dnb is the most compartmentalised genre of music on earth. its too hard. you just kind of have to get it going for yourself, find what you like.
