Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi All,

Just wondering peoples views on the Radio 1 / 2 FM cross promotion - listening to morning Ireland last few mornings and at about 8.30am on Radio 1 runs cross promos for listeners to tune into Will Leahy at 4pm on 2FM.

For me it's a head scratcher - different audiences, formats, issue of taking R1 listeners to 2FM - beggers belief ?

Also is 2FM a station with a split personailty when compared to BBC R1 - do they know who they are servicing and should the 15 - 34 yr old target audience be shortened

    Rant over.....:)

I'm on the cusp of the 18-34 audience (alas, on the wrong side of it) and I listen to both stations. Admittedly more to Radio 1 these days but I have been known to switch over for the music. Perhaps they're trying to make punters who are fed up of the talking switch over to 2fm rather than listen to Fony Tenton on Today FM or whatever's on the local stations.

Nothing about 2fm has or ever will appeal to me & no matter how much Radio 1 plug it makes no difference.

Why would a Morning Ireland listener shoose Will Leahy over Drivetime, The Last Word or George Hook?

Agree with what Firetrap has said, but they really could do with freshening up the music on the promos.

Robyn's "With Every Heartbeat" is hardly "too modern (or whatever she says in the Will Leahy promo)" when it's been out since 2007.

Point taken about the switching from talk to music might as well keep it in the RTE family. Also point taken about the music in the promos - ting ting's - robyn and I forget the third one but dated at this stage.

My other point was should 2 FM be targeting itself at a much more defined demographic maybe ?

They shouldn't be mentioned in the same lifetime let alone the same sentence.
As someone just past the demographic for both stations, I'll still tune into BBC R1 religiously (particularly at weekends) but I can't listen to 2fm for longer than 10 minutes without getting very annoyed (either at the music, or the presenter or both). Even their specialist shows at the weekend (mainly "dance" music) are terrible and seem to have been tacked on to the schedule as an afterthought. I know the arguments regarding different audiences and economies of scale etc, but 2Fm just don't seem to "get it" at all
That's coming from someone who listens to RTÉ R1 for a fair bit of the day too. About the only thing I switch off on that staion is Tubridy and Mooney.
As for the cross promo? See my rant in the Worst/best radio ads thread...they're only putting this sh*te in the ad breaks to pad them out because no-one is buying advertising airtime.

On the subject of music being classed as 'too modern' when its two years old; theres an extremely irritating promo for Colm & Jim Jim which has Roisin Murphy's Let Me Know and an older Kaiser Chiefs song as being 'new and fresh' or similar terms. Both are 2007 I think...

Are they reusing old promos or is someone just stuck in a timewarp?

edit: Its a Fratellis song from 2006 not a Kaiser Chiefs song now that I think about it.

Amongst certain sectors of the stations official target audience these shows get huge listenership figures - its one of the things they actually do right in trying to get a 15-34 audience.

Maybe I'm just too used to the UK sound but I find there's an over emphasis on certain genres and sounds on 2fm's dance shows both now and over the years; too much tech/electro or something. I have no doubt they still have a large listenership though...if you live someplace where 2fm and a few other nationals are all you can receive then it's going to be the best choice if you're into your electronic music.
To me it all sounds same-y (like it only pulls from a certain pool of Irish DJs/club nights or something) and isn't varied enough. Again the comparisons to R1 are unfair but I'm afraid that's the standard I judge it against.
Additionally RnaG's Taíbh Tuthaill (sp?) outshines anything that 2fm output especially on the thursday and friday nights...can't say I'm sure if that show is aimed at the same demographic or not, but I find the track selection is streets ahead of saturday night 2fm.
