What to do for indoor dogs' toilet?

We're getting two rescue Jack Russell puppies next week. They will be indoor dogs as we live in an apartment. What we are wondering about is what do we do about them going to the toilet. Is it possible to train a dog to use a kitty litter type of invention? For 3 days of the week they will be on their own from 9 to 5, hence us getting two so that one wouldn't be lonely on it's own. We've both always had dogs growing up but they were all outdoor dogs. The dogs will have access to the balcony where we were hoping to put some sort of "toilet" for them. Has anyone any experience of anything like this or are we crazy to even think of training them to always go in the one spot. Thanks for any advice! :)

Might help if you put a few sheets of newspaper around the the area they will most be active,ie kitchen balcony .Nothing worse than waking up in the morning or coming home to a load of pup poo /pee .Easy to dispose then .

We've put up fencing around it so no worries of them escaping :) There's a cat flap that we're hoping they'd use, it's a big enough balcony and we'd like them to be able to get out in the sun/fresh air if they want to. They'll obviously be taken on walks too but the more places there is for them to suss out during the day the better for them probably. They'll have access to all the rooms too during the day (what are we letting ourselves in for lol) Thanks for the link, it's going to be hard work toilet training two puppies, neither of us have done it before but I'm taking a week off work to settle them in so hopefully they'll be kind to me!

You know the wee wee training pads for puppies, they might work, they are available in Argos and I think are available on zooplus.uk (uk site is cheaper than ie site). You can also get the tray to go with the wee wee pads, I'm trying to find a site that sells the tray atm.

Not sure to be honest . Thing is pups will want to explore and do their stuff anywere it suits them .We had our pup in kitchen with layers of newspaper around his bed space and a back yard to run around a bit ( in between walks ) .

Expect a lot of chewing ie , shoes ,wires any and everything .

    You have being warned :D
