And do you never watch cartoons?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 995 ✭✭✭Ass

I did as a kid, but I grew out of them after I was about 8 or 9.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,778 ✭✭✭✭Kold

You grew out of a certain form of expression. Fair enough.

How is cartoons a form of expression? That's a bit like calling teletubbies a form of expression.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

So you never watch the Simpsons or Family Guy or South Park?

It's a rather silly question given how broad the subject matter is.. sort of like asking 'why do you watch films?' or 'why do you read books?'

Teletubbies is a show. Cartoons are a medium. It's like saying that you grew out of painting because fingerpaintings didn't really float your boat after a certain age.

Here you are talking about tolerance, and in the same post you are calling me a troll because my opinion and views are different to yours. Irony at it's best.

You've been responded to,and your still pushing for a reaction.

Its simple, the anime forum folk like anime. Not all video games are for kids, not all cartoons are for kids.

What makes cartoons for kids? Answer that first.

(Obvious troll, but I felt like responding anyway)

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,339 ✭✭✭✭LoLth

Despite the report of trolling, here's nothing wrong with the question. Ass's responses however, seem to be a bit blinkered and certainly look like a troll response.. but, giving the benefit of the doubt:

Anime are cartoons. yes. some anime fans might disagree or take umbrage at that fact but it is still a fact, a drawn motion picture = cartoon.

Does this mean they are for kids only? Not at all.

comics are drawn pictures on paper. Comics are generally read by children. , does this mean the works of Rembrandt are suitable for children only ?

By saying "but they're cartoons" as if only children should ever watch something animated you are asserting a very basic fault of logic. you are taking a broad category of media and defining it by one singular facet of its audience. The cartoon is the media, its the content that defines what age grop it is suitable for.

Teens read glossy magazines, does that mean all glossy magazines are suitable for teens? If so, then a 13 year old should be allowed read penthouse in public or any of the more hardcore skinmags. you see the problem with such limiting definitions ?

Anime is a form of cartoon. it is a certain drawing and writing style taken from Japanese culture. However, just because Pokemon is drawn in anime style, it does not mean that ALL anime is pokemon. Watch legend of the overfiend and tell me that you would allow your 6 year old to watch it. Many, not all, anime have very adult storylines and content and these are certianly NOT meant for kids.

seperate the medium from the content first and then you can understand what the rest of these people are trying to say.

Look, this may be a troll post or not. I'm going to assume that this is NOT a troll post.

The thing is animation is just another form of entertainment medium. There are lots of ideas and themes that are explored in animation (especially anime) that are not usually explored in liveaction films. These are not just cartoons for kids. For every pokemon cartoon that's out there there is a Ghost In The Shell just as for every Hannah Montana film that's out there there is a Fight Club or Godfather. Anime covers a huge range of topics.

Sure, most of what the mainstream sees is pokemon, digimon and all that and they read about these corrupting tits-n-tentacles anime but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Anime ranges from kids stuff, to crime, to sci-fi, horror, romance, soaps and, yes, even porn. Put it this way: No anime? No Matrix movies.

Animated movies/series can be very articulate and intelligent. For example the 1990's series of Batman was a fantastic series. The writing and the storylines were wellcrafted and thoughtful. At the same time as Val Kilmer was driving up walls in his car the series was asking about what kind of person dresses up in leather and fights crime at night. and how responsible is he for some of the actions of the bad guys.... and good guys

There is also the technical standpoint of animation that some find fascinating (Myself included). Animation can be extremely beautiful in just the same way that liveaction cinematography can be. Borrow a copy of The Lion King and watch the opening scene with the lights off on the largest tele you can find.

Animation is not for everyone but each to their own. I, for one, cannot stand the amount of CSI and Law&Order series on tele: I cannot stand the whole "Murder-of-the-week"" thing. Everything wrapped up nice and easy in time for tea. Just seems like Murder She Wrote the next generation. And I know that I am reallllly in the minority on that thought but there it is.

    And your point is?

Animation is an art forum that has been around longer then film. Would you say to someone who liked Paintings "but they're just blobs of paint'?

Animation requires skill both in art and storytelling and alot of people appreciate the amount of work and the artistic elements that go into animated shows and films same as people who love a certain genre of music or film.

Cartoons are animations and anime is Japanese for animation so,yeah, they are the same in that sense. Some anime I love, some I like, some I dislike. It's just the same as everything else in life.I think you believe they are for kids and why do adults like them.Well, most are not for kids.Watch Ghost in the Shell,End of Evangelion,Akira or Elfen Lied if you do not believe us.

I was just illustrating a point that anything can be seen as childish even when it's not, I know airsoft guns are far from toys and there is more to it than just the guns themselves, just like there is more to anime than just the kids shows most people would be aware of, wich they then assume is what all anime is like. I just felt it ironic that he's posting on a forum for people with a hobby that a lot of people might find to be immature on the surface (I think airsoft is a pretty interesting hobby myself and it looks like good fun too), unfortunately just like many people perceive anime.

As others have said, anime is just one category of expression. There are so many different types of anime, and so many different groups of people that these are aimed at.

and, they are pretty good ;)

I like anime cartoons because they have distinctive narratives which touch on teenage issues, disorders, war and everyday life which people can relate to. You don't really see narratives like them on your ordinary television yet you may disagree if you are a fan of soap operas. Anyway what is wrong with adults liking cartoons? Are we too old to watch The Simpsons and South Park? Cartoons come in all types, shapes and sizes, Tim Burton has done some wonderful animations enjoyed by both adults and children.

I don't suppose we can expect a substantial reply in response to the points TheIrishGrover and LoLth raised above, or should we take it that you're now in agreement?
