Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I want to copy all the MSI files on MY PC to an external hard drive to save space.

Is that something that will impact on my PC.

possibly, if there is a system variable that points to the folder you could modify it.

XP / Vista windows folder seems to bloat a lot with msi and other files and very hard to get info on what exactly you can safely remove / move

download windows install cleaner and install it
then in a command prompt in the folder type MSIZAP G! this will delete msi's you no longer need from the installer folder.

use spacemonger or sequioa view to see which folders are really taking up the space before going on a wild goose chase

still not sure if $hf_mig$ can be moved safely or $PatchCache$ or dllcache or ServicePackFiles or assembly or Driver Cache,

Depends on the msi's you are referring to....never delete the msi/mst files that are in the System folder, they will be small files anyway, Windows needs them to run repairs/upgrades.

If you are talkng about an msi file that you downloaded and installed an app from then yeah you can delete them, it won't impact the operation of the application. It will impact a repair though, if you accidently delete some files and Windows trys to repair it will look for that MSI file that you deleted (the same goes for adding uninstalled features). Windows can still repair registry keys and everything else from the cached msi in the system folder but by default the cached msi only contains the msi tables not the files.

You can redirect Windows to look elsewher for the MSI (you external HD), it's a reg key setting, but you need to set it individually for each application, there is no single key that you can set which will redirect all application repairs to a single location.
The reg key is: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\currentversion\uninstall\<GUID of your application> Name:Installsource Data:<path to your msi>
