Worst injury you've had from playing ball....

Was reading the "do you play football" thread and it seems there are an awful lot of lads not playing now (or at least blaming it) due to injury. So just wondering what's the worst injury people have had whilst playing and the most painful.

Personally Ive had all the usual, shin splints twisted ankle, pulled\strained hammy etc etc. The most painful I had though was when I ruptured my cruciate ligament, absolute agony and the worst as in long term was when I had a hernia on my groin that needed surgery, took a while to diagnose and recover from OP. Thankfully iv been mostly injury free for the past 2 seasons.

So what war wounds have you had?

I went to volley a size 5, rock hard mitre ball out of the air and caught it full smack (on my toes). F**ked up the tendons in my foot. Couldn't shoot with my instep for about six months.

Feel sorry for anybody with cruciate damage. Desperate injury.

Broke Nose 7 times 8 if you include the rebuild after 5th break
Collapsed left cheek bone, requiring plastic surgery
    Dislocated shoulder
Broke both schaefoids (sp) in wrist
    Cracked hip bone
Tore both groins badly doing the splits while not meaning to, out for 9 months
Laterals, medials and anterior cruciate in right kne
    Laterals and Medials in left
    Ankle ligaments in both
    Broke big toe left foot

As well as tearing hammers, groins, calf, thigh muscles etc.

    Now retired and playing golf;)

I damaged some knee cartilage when I was about 19 training on all weather concrete, didn't think much of it and it healed itself reasonably enough that I could play again about 4 weeks later.

It finally gave up the ghost and tore on a fateful evening 4/5 years later in the Phoenix Park when training with Boardeaux. Man do I remember the long hard walk from the training pitch to Shay's car, I think it took me 20 minutes to everyone elses 5.

Got Osgood schlatter disease in my knee as a kid, but never gave up playing after the docs told me to rest it, and now I'm suffering the consequences, I've been out all season with the pain, but hopefully I'll be fit for the new season coming.

Other than that I never had any major worries.

Think you misread the thread, its injuries from playing ball not from motorcycle accidents!

Collapsed cheek bone.. ouch. I take it you were a CH then?

Ive done my groins aswell, niggly little injuries, apparently its from repetitive excercises like shuttles and situps.

    did my Cruciate Ligament in

funny thing is when i ever walked I'd just fall of a sudden so had to go to a specialist and my playing days are behind me

    Football in the groin!

Apart from bumps and bruises, only "injury" i ever had was a pulled hamstring. Was more annoying than painful, just as you think it's healed and are raring to play and stretch your legs again... pop.

I've started playing again recently after a few years of threatening to. Shin splints kicking in a bit but that's more due to jogging in ill fitting trainers than the football I think.

Played football for about 15 years and never got a serious injury, not even anything that would rule me out for more than a couple of games. Was not injury prone at all.

Then in one quick moment i broke mt tibial plateau really really badly, tore my anterior cruciate ligmanet, small tear in the posterior and destroyed the meniscus tissue.

Havent ran properly since, let alone play football, was 2 years ago.

Went for a header from corner. got nudged in the air and landed akwardly.

Snapped posterior and anterior ligament damaged the meniscus.
Had the op to fix it and still cant play ball. Doc reckons I will need knee replacement by the time im 40.

Tore my groin completely. 12 months+ before it was right.

Tore my quad last season, out for 3 months.

Currently nursing a damaged heal that has me on the sidelines at the mo.

On one of the many times I went over on my ankles, within a couple of mins it was the size of a tennis ball, that really scared the sh!t outta me. Thought it was goin' to explode. Fractured & ligament damage. Some mental colours going on there too.

Broken collar bone, broken nose, and various sprains and back pulls.

Ligaments in my left ankle after coming down from a header into a hole. Had a foot the size of an elephant's few minutes later. Then I got a tape bandage and played next Sunday since we were short players. Cast for 4 weeks after that. :( Idiot me.

Broken collar bone is nasty, did mine a few years back, wasn't football related, was drink related.

    A quick list.

Done both ankles, which is sort of a right of passage for most playing ball on those perfectly saturday/sunday league pitches!!!

Bruised 2 ribs and was knocked out after going up for a header at a corner and getting an elbow in the back of my head. The ribs were done by apparently landing on my own arm.

Got a heavy tackle and on falling to the ground I put my hand out to stop myself. Bend the hand right back and compressed two bones in my wrist. Amazing didn't break anything.

The odd strained muscle here and there but the cream of them all is a complete snapping of the cruciate in the right knee. Twice. Hence why I no longer play.

Thankfully since I've been playing ball, the most serious "injury" I've had is a case of shin splints which was down to me not warming up properly but got so bad that once the game was over I could barely walk for an hour.

I'm sure as I get older i'll start picking up a few injuries, I know a few lads who have been really really plagued by serious injuries which is a big shame.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

broken my foot twice (still not right)
tore ligaments in my knee (still not right)
dislocated both thumbs quite a few times

then your various other bits and pieces

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 328 ✭✭Codofwar

Tore medial ligament in my left knee three times
Strained medial and cruciate in right knee
6 stitchs across my right knee as there was a sharp stone on the pitch going for a sliding tackle (got the ball though)
Covered my arse in nettle burns after being pushed off balance near the sideline
    split lip a few times
Broke both bones in my right arm after my own goalie clattered me mid air as I was going for a clearing header
twisted both ankles a few times
    shin splints
brusing on the top of both feet
blood clot in my calf after a guy landed on my leg

Cant remember at the minute but i think there is more

I've never done anything ridiculously bad (as in cruciate knee injuries or shattered hip bones or the like) but lots of niggly stuff.

I'm almost arthritic now with the pain in my ankles from ripping ligaments and breaking bones. I shuffle when I wake up in the morning, takes at least 30 mins before I'm right. Same at the end of the day too. The worst is after a pitch and putt scratch cup or championship. Its unbelievable agony.
Listen to your doctors kids, never rush back from injuries, no matter who tells you otherwise, or how important the game, you'll feel it in years to come.

I broke my ankle which I'm currently recovering from. Stupid little thing when I was running and I turned quickly and just went over on it. It was the first time I actually screamed in pain.

    Fluid in the Knee Cap.

    Hamstring.

Thats about it-everything else was superficial.

Ran in to goal post and got a black eye :D And another time broke a few ribs when a guy hit me on the side with his knee.I did not know they where broken and kept playing lol Thought I was just winded because I could not breath properly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭Iago

    Fractured Both ankles
Ruptured the tendons in my right ankle
    Torn calf muscle
Torn cartilage in my left knee
    Dislocated my elbow
    Broke my nose (twice)
    Broke my upper arm
Tore the ligaments in my lower arm
    Two cracked ribs
    Couple of broken toes

a selection of sprains and twists that aren't worth talking about

I know that feeling. Broke Tibia and fibula as well as dislocating my ankle all in the same challenge in Feb 2008. Only now beginning to come back into light training. Did it the week before Edaurdo too and broke a bone more than him!

Add into that a strained achilles tendon, damaged patella tendon and torn brevis muscle made that a pretty bad night!

Before that I had broken 4 fingers, dislocated my pelvis, torn quad muscle broken front tooth and received 8 stitches into a head wound!

Did the cruciates in my right knee which required surgery when i was 25, was back playing about a year later & did the cartilage in my left knee & needed keyhole surgery on that one then, not a pleasant spell for me at all. Knees were never the same afterwards & i ended up having to drop down a coupe of levels (or more) before stopping playing altogether when i was 29.

Went in for a 70-30 tackle in a U-16 match years back, guy went to jump over me after the clipping the ball to one side

Well, he caught my head with his knee, I swallowed my tongue and only that the trainer knew CPR, I wouldnt be writing this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,106 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Broken collarbone (5 years on and still cant sleep on it comfortably)
    Torn wrist ligaments

Most annoying is the current one, torn groin. So far its 5 months and counting since i've played pain free. Made my comeback after 7weeks (and a ridiculous amount of money on physio) of not playing recently, still very obviously not right. Grand for 20mins, then goes to hell. Gonna give it a break and try and strengthen more before i go back again.

Oh I forgot one. In my first game in Oz I went up for a header and copped a cracker of an elbow from my centre half partner. Split my head nicely just beside my eye. Got a few paper stitches on the sideline and went back on but was a bit nasty next day. Took a picture for the grandkids :D

Only one I've had that stopped me playign for more than a week or so was a dislocated finger picked up while playing in goal. Never got it sorted properly and eventually needed surgery leaving it stuck in the position its in.

Other than that just twisted ankles and ligament damage, groin/calf/hamstring strains that are starting to cause me some discomfort if I play more than a couple of times in a week.I really should keep away from playing for a couple of months to let everything rest but meh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,426 ✭✭✭Roar

tore my right ankle ligaments asunder playing 5 a side two years ago, took a shot, landed and went over my ankle. completely innocuous.

and the injury coincided with me giving up cigarettes, so i ended up putting on about two stone that I've been unable to get rid of since. :(

injury still affects me to this day

Dislocated knee-cap after a nothing challenge.
Two of us chasing for the ball and as i was stretching for it i collapsed.
Rock hard, extremely uneven ground(sheep field) to blame:mad:
Scariest moment ever tbh. I had never seen a dislocated kneecap. Had seen loads of broken legs like cissé's and stuff.
Then gave up team soccer and was playing in a friends and messed it up again. Didnt pop out that time thank god.
    So now....i stick to golf

My pride has been injured from sending the ball over the cross bar from 6 yards. That injury does not heal.

Physically though, I've twisted the same ankle 4-5 times over a period of roughly seven years. Ligaments are in a bit of a state.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭Theresalwaysone

    Medial Ligament tear.
    Lateral Ligament tear (other leg).
    ACL Strain and minor damage.
    Meniscus tear.
    Broken Ankle.

Never had any full on tear of big muscle groups its always been the niggly ones, the extremities or the knees.

Anyone with knee injuries will know that they are without doubt the most annoying, niggly and painful injuries you can get. Its not fair.

Broke my kneecap in a tackle that left me out for 6 months.
Dislocated shoulder twice but that was at the Gah.
Numerous breaks and sprains of wrist, ankle, elbow, knee etc.

Worst by a long shot was when i tackled someone as he was about to shoot. He followed through and almost caused me to lose my left testicle. Had some internal bleeding and no sports (incl bedroom sports) for about 2 months. Walked with a limp for 2 months as well. It swelled up to more than twice the normal size and is still slightly deformed.
Fcuking painful thinking about it as i write.:(

Never had anything too serious. Wish I hadn't read this thread now, next time I play I'll be on egg shells. The only niggly injury I have is a recurring one in my thumb. If I save a shot and don't get my whole hand behind it and it catches the thumb awkward it swells like a balloon.

Sounds all to familar. Ive had a groin problem starting pretty much a year ago to this date. Kept playing on it at first it was ok. Now im completely crocked. Cant kick a football with force with my right leg without feeling im ripping the bottom of my stomach.

After about ten minutes in a match I get a stiffness and after the match for about two days I cant even turn in bed properly with it being so bad nevermind walking in pain for about a week.

I didnt play for 3 months after christmas (spent over a grand going to a physio for months) went back playing and its no better. The doctor tells me rest it

Ive never had it diagnosed properly so im gunna ask him to set up a scan for me but my advice to anyone with a groin injury is stay off it untill you dont feel ANY pain. Im only 22 and was crocked with it this season. Not the most disgusting injury but by far the worst ive had. And i love playing football which makes it all the harder.

Besides that I tore ligaments in my right ankle and go over on it alot anymore. Got a knee in the head and was concussed playing the Ga. Apart from little sprains and back pain from heading a ball that was a rocket of a shot not much else.

    Stupid groin:mad:

I did the same, kept playing on it and making it worse. When i eventually went to physio, she said that by not icing it straight away and taking care of it properly it had healed wonky (think of your fingers linked together, it should have been like they could slide in and out of each other, but it was like they were at an angle so when they tried to stretch there was resistence which caused them to go again from the slightest thing). She massaged the muscle out (agony) to get it back to starting point and had me do loads of excercises on it for a month before i was allowed back. It was still too soon, but at least for the first 30mins i wasn't even aware of it, which was a first for a long time, could kick fine etc, it just wasn't able for the full hour. Definately on the mend though, so it might be a good idea for you to head into someone like that or it might not get healed properly.
