Gas fire - varying flame question

I have a gas fire in the living room - I presume standard type (maybe 11 years old). There's a lever on it that changes the flame from blue to yellow.

Anyone know if this is only for aesthetics or whether it has any effect on the heat output?

My boiler has died and I'm trying to generate as much heat as possible to warm the house.

    Thanks, J
