Applied Maths 2000 Q9(b)

hi there, sorry to be asking this cos I haven't really looked at the question properly myself (in my defence I'm in Australia and my magic brown Oliver Murphy book isnt) but I've had a request from home asking for help with this question. Its apparently pre-department marking schemes on the SEC website so if anyone happens to have a worked solution for it it'd be much appreciated. Specially cos it'd save me trying to remember a lot of stuff I don't remember.

Draw the forces in for everything. I took the forces on the block and then the object as a whole. So, T + B = mg for the block and 2T = (M + m)g for the system.

Sub in your values for T and you should end up with s = 2 x m/(m - M). m divided by m - M is greater than 1. Hence, s will be greater than 2.
