If spending an extra few quid on print or any other service is going to put you out of business then you're practically insolvent anyway.

You were complaining about a didn't buy from you when you were 33% higher. Flyers isn't going to break me but if I pay 33% more for everything it would be stupid of me.

I would never buy from an Irish supplier just to support Ireland. If they offer competitive value which many many Irish companies do I will. I'm just fed up of idiotic businesses who charge over the odds due to being inefficient who complain that people who buy elsewhere are unpatriotic.

33%! Lies, damned lies and statistics...
It was a difference of €5 for god's sake. It showed utter disrespect to me not only as a fellow business man but also as a customer, it's his loss. my profit would have been negligable on it anyway. You're making out as if I had a higher margin than the chap in newry. The reality is that my input costs are way higher.

No printer in the republic got funding from a cross border body to purchase equipment!

I wouldn't dream of saying to him 'how much is your coffee: €2?' To hell with that I can get it for €1.50 in Newry, you're ripping me off'

You have to compare like with like in the market in which you operate. Otherwise why stop at Europe, are Irish companies ripping you off if they're charging more than Indian or Chinese rates? The town I'm in has a lot of very welcome recent arrivals. I recently printed some programmes for an event in Lagos, couldn't believe I was being asked to do it so I queried would it not be cheaper to get it printed there. I was told yes buy they can not produce the quality (because the printers don't have the money to maintain or invest in new equipment). That's already started happening to some extent here! This again shows that it's not always about price.

Right, I'm off home, another busy day awaits tomorrow.

But Minikin I've been in the production/print buying business for decades and I know how it works. I'm organised enough to get my stuff together so don't need anyone to pull out all the stops, that's why the last couple of small jobs I've bought, have been from Vistaprint - they are very good at what they do - selling very cheap print, if you don't mind waiting.

However, I may have a couple of biggish jobs coming up later this year that you're welcome to quote on. (I know you from over on CI btw so know you're up to the job. ;) ) You will probably need to farm the binding etc out but if you don't go silly on the mark-up........

    Please PM me your details.

I'm trying to get some new cards printed but some companies I've contacted can't accept my print-ready artwork. I've PM'd some folks off this thread to see - if I have any positive feedback I'll leave it hear later.

The reality is with only Euro 50K invested in equipment ( I am in an allied business and this figure is peanuts for the equipment required to run a modern print shop)

It's not really. Depends on what click charges you are paying.

it's ok jr, let him have his little dig at me… he's right i should have invested in an iGen the first day i opened… but then again i was financing it myself because the banks see printers as high risk as so many of them have gone bust due to work leaving the state.

This thread is getting off way track and away from what it was originally intended for. Minikin, can I suggest you post up your business contact details so anyone looking for printing can contact you in future..

    @minikin

To be fair to Minikin he has certainly defended his printing business in a very robust manner on this thread.

It sounds like you do offer good deals to your customers too. Which is something many printers are failing to do which is why this thread started.

I certainly think he would be worth approaching for a price on printing anyway.

I wouldn't say he was defending his business well. While it does sound like he runs a very good business, making accusations that other posters don't pay taxes is never a wise thing to do.

Although I have never met nor talked to Peter, I have learnt a huge amount from his posts here. From what I gather he is very experienced and it's great to see him being so willing to help. I am young and still 'finding my feet' in the business world and I appreciate what he does here. Minikin shouldn't be alienating himself from other members here. Had he not attacked other users but just defended his business I would have considered using him for a load of flyers that I need done as he seems very reasonably priced. However, due to unjustified personal attacks I wouldn't be so sure. I still wish you all the best minikin in the future.

What size and type of leaflets are you printing? ie DL 130gsm Silk Gloss etc etc... I use print companies a lot in my job and have found that if you ask local print companies they are more than happy to deal, get a couple of quotes from local printers, get back to the them all once they have quoted and tell them they are "a bit high" without giving away your best price and see how low they come, 9/10 times they will come back much cheaper, if that doesnt work tell them your best price and watch how quickly they beat it!

    Hello Guys

Need 500 A5 Sized full colour flyers to be printed off. I need just the one side of the flyer to be printed on aswell. I have been getting qoutations from 75e+vat up to 100e+vat. Is this competitive in your opinion. Thanks for any replies

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭The Guvnor

    Kind of competitive.

The set-up costs are where you get charged so it really is a catch 22 - you need just 500 but 5000 might cost just over twice the price of 500 etc.

    What weight of paper?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭The Guvnor

I have found as well that printers can specialise so may be more competitive on say business cards and another might be more competitive on posters for example.
