Question about sim cards

I have a question my mother has a phone that she got off a friend which is on the same network (Vodafone) but the phone doesn't seem to accept the sim card(it works fine with her current OLD phone). The sim is old as in she's had it since eircell were operating in the country. Do newer phones accept older sim cards or will she have to get a new sim? If not, do Vodafone do sim upgrades, whereby she can keep her current number without changing from prepay, etc?

She needs a SIM upgrade. Vodafone can do it, and she keeps number, credit etc.

Pop into a store and it should be fairly painless.
