Can anyone advise on tree nurseries or garden centres around here that would specialise in selling mature(ish) trees that I could plant in a back garden to offer shelter to the garden?

I'm after something around 6 - 7ft tall that will grow quickly when planted in your average back garden near a dividing concrete wall.

Doesn't Woody's have a garden centre in waterford? Or it used to anyway. We bought a mature(ish) tree there about three years ago and it's still goin strong so maybe check there? There's also a Garden Centre out in Faithlegg just before the golf course.

Pretty sure McGuires garden centre in Woodstown (the Woodstown by Dunmore, not the other one) has mature trees - I know my folks get a lot of stuff there.

trotter, it is next to impossible to but 'mature' trees anywhere around, the closest you will get is a two/three year old tree which is not very mature. woodies dont do trees, but maguires and orchardstown do. there is also a great little nursery out past mooncoin off teh main road (its signposted) that is great value for money and the trees are good quality. (had priced all these when we were planting trees on our site and by far found them to be the best bang for your buck)

It might be worth taking a trip down to these guys:

    http://www.futureforests.net/taller_trees.htm

Saying that, if you plant a tree when it is young (1 - 2 foot) it is gonna take hold in your garden far faster than planting a 6 foot tree.

You might find that in time the smaller tree catches up with the larger tree, and is healthier.

Also, for fast growing trees, check out ash, birch, willow and alder.

Have to agree Flyod Soul, if you plant a mature tree its gonna have root damge or bad roots from being in a huge pot, google a couple of fast growing tree types. Also you need to find out what kind of soil do you have.

Is it peaty or sandy etc. this will determine how fast and how well your tree will grow.
