Living in a commercial property?

    This topic came up while discussing renting houses with some mates, commercial property seems to be a lot cheaper than residential property in dublin, warehouses etc...

    so the question came up , if you were to rent/buy an office/warehouse could you legally live in it , does it make any difference whether you rent or own it, and if it is illegal what could happen if you get caught ,

    (im not talking about letting tennants live in it , just the owner/renter

    When planning permission is sought for commercial property, it will usually state as a condition that its not uses as a residence. So No is the simple answer.
    However if you mean are the Garda going to turn up and tell you to get out, then i cant see that happen, who would know (unless the out side is changed).
    But really why would you want to, any/most commercial property would need extensive work to make it into a residence.

    Whether it is stated as a condition of planning or not, you would be in breach of planning regulations. You would also probably be in breach of fire regulations.


    If you were reported or the planning authority caught on to it, you would be issued with an enforcement notice and ordered to stop or face court proceedings.


    So short answer is yes, it is illegal.
