Good, but lets not forget that Gobus do Dublin - Galway NONSTOP for €20 return and have free wifi and toilets onboard.

No Galway to Cork reductions I notice :(

Another nail in the coffin of Irish Rail.

bk: Travelling off-peak with Irish rail and booking online, I can go Limk-Dublin in 2hr15 instead of >4hr, and for €30. Nice new trains and prebooked seat - even power sockets for the laptop. I won't be switching to bus anytime soon (although admittedly even paying full fare by rail, I'd still choose the train - the bus is hellishly long, cramped and miserable).

The improvements in bus services over the past few years have been great. They are now starting to provide a quality product at an acceptable price.

This is the kind of kick up the backside that Irish Rail needs.

The expectation is that once the motorways are complete, that the bus companies, will lay on direct non-stop bus services with toilets on board, that will likely equal or be faster then the train and obviously a lot cheaper *.

Yes you might get a nice off peak ticket, but remember most people travel peak and therefore have to pay €60+.

Actually, Irish Rail started doing this first, so surely it is they who are kicking the others?

Hardly likely. The bus services have been improving for the past number of years. The train service has not. The greater competition from buses should force IÉ to up their game.

I have usually travelled Gorey/Dublin by rail but the recent improvements in the bus timetable led me to change. Guess what, the bus is actually faster, plus I can get a bus every hour for most of the day while the last train is 6.30pm. No contest.
True, the train is more comfortable (provided you can get a seat) but the buses are not uncomfortable and the convenience of knowing you're not going to be stranded after 6.30 makes up for that.

Maybe if they made them more frequent and didnt put the bus stop a half mile from any of the shops in Mahon people might use it. Also, perhaps if they provided a BUS SHELTER rather than the 'pole in the ground' crap.

Yep i agree with Chris, the southern orbital is far too infrequent for a start, doesn't run on weekends and the service finishes around 7 each day(my stop is at the CIT terminus and its rare to see either the 1 or the 19 anywhere near full).

It just isn't practical for most people to use without severely restricting a persons day but then you can say that about most of BEs routes in Cork. In Donegal, Shannon & Leinster BE can run late night services but not in Cork its madness.
