There are LOTS of boards.ie users that don't live in Ireland.

People using the internet could be anywhere in the world.

Why did you leave out your location, which was rather important to your post, on this occasion?

    Similar story myself.....

I was collecting a DJ to drive him back to the Airport after a show last summer. I was in my Dads IS250 and I was not speeding. I was doing just under 100kmh and a bird flew out of a bush and flew straight into the front bumper. It hit the place were the big screw goes when you need to tow the car. Anyway, the bird literally exploded! Blood and feathers covered the front left side of the car with the wiper area clean.
It was 4.30am on a summer morning, no car washes open. I had to drive from Letterkenny to Belfast and back before I could wash it off. I had to scrub the blood and feathers off they where dried in that much.
First bird strike, I am sure it wont be the last!

We regularly go over the ton in Traffic, it's just part of the job, I've been driving cars at 200/250 and 300 kph before on emergency dashes down the M50 or M11/N11.

The road, the weather, the car. All perfect.

The crap we call the average driver in Ireland? That's the dangerous part. I can count on one hand the number of times we haven't had to brake to under 90 kph on a 120 kph stretch of the M50 because some thicko thinks he's more important than all the other road users. Especially the two gents in the big white car with flashing headlamps, flashing blue light bar and winglets/grille repeaters blaring their siren in yelp mode to get past his arrogant sh*t face.

Get the f**k off your high horses, people. :)

 I'm assuming this is a p!ss take?

Technically you hit it at over 200km/h due to relative velocity....(ie. The bird had some speed too...)

    Anywho...

    Lol thread.

Maybe he wasn't, I once was involved in one of the many "Indicators on a Roundabout" threads and posted forgetting I was in France and that everything I said should have been reversed :o:) Link

But if it was baiting, didn't he do a great job all the same? :pac:

It's a shame that you can't adblock phrases as well as words, it's one of the most annoying ones used here.

When not prefixed with "moral", high horse just means an arrogant and stubborn manner. And that can just as easily be applied to the people on the other side of the fence in this forum.

Who would have died had the OP hit him at 60km/h.

I hit a bird at about 80km/h, lost the front grille of the car I was driving (Grande Punto) at the time. The bird was in small bits across the front of the rad apparently...

Driving to work today was pushing 200km/h

I do this drive every week was pushing along as normal... see a bird way high up and then he dive bombs down ...

Next thing .. WHOOOMP ... Feathers, Blood, and then could see the bird landing about 300 meters away in my rear view.

TBH I'm surprised the windscreen didnt sustain any damage ! thank god for the guy that invented toughened glass !

In hindsight I was lucky I didnt hit the brakes as he could have flown into the front grille or into the center of the Windscreen where its a bit weaker.

Anyways, it was a brown pants moment, anyone else have an experience like this ?

Only other experience i've heard of was my uncle hitting a deer at 60 mph and the Jeep was completely wrecked, got a nice bit of venison out of it though!

 who gives a flying fcuk !!!!

Sitting here in the library in college (exams and all that), read the whole 12 pages.

Minute I read the first post, I remembered the OP lived abroad or something....and after that it was simply quality.

I'd rather if the high horses fcked off, but on this occasion they have given me a wealth of entertainment :pac:

This would make a great leaving cert maths question. If a car is driving at 200kph and a bird dives at it, hits the windscreen and bounces 300 meters behind the car, how fast was the bird going when it hit?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35 moneymouth77

It depends on so much though! How heavy is the bird, the consistency and bounce of the windscreen, the surface you're driving on...

I don't see what the big deal is. Exceeding the speed limit is perfectly fine so long as it's in a foreign country. I mean, on the M1 just outside Belfast there a while back, I pushed my Laguna up as far as it'll go.

Got all of 5kph out of it before my legs gave out.

I reckon they wouldnt have much of a problem catching you at 300, unwrapping you from the tree might take some time though.

He could have done something about it at 60, at 200 u cant take any avoiding action.

Well the speed of the car would not be relevant for a start because we are trying to determine the speed at which the bird was traveling. At the exact moment of impact the bird was stopped, I think, so speed was 0 kph. Do I get an A?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,819 ✭✭✭✭peasant

just to be pernickety here, I don't think that the bird actually fully hit the windscreen.

Windscreens aren't made out of toughened glass, but laminated glass (two sheets of normal glass glued together with a film of plastic inbetween) and they do crack fairly quickly on impact.
I would assume that the bird was caught in the not inconsiderable updraft of air that must exist in front of a windscreen at 200 km/h and therefore only glanced off the windscreen instead of hitting it full on.
