If anybody else is thinking of this, i'll let you know how it goes.

I'm downgrading because i want lower pings for gaming.

I dont download much either 10-20gb a month.

You can get good pings from Eircom on the 7 meg lines. You just need to ask them to drop the interleaving to the minimum level. You may have to sacrifice some bandwidth.

I have a 7.6 m/bit line with Eircom and my pings are =

I thought when all the upgrades were rolled out that this was discussed at length and ultimately proved to be futile... i.e. Eircom couldn't or wouldn't change the interleaving levels for individual lines? Thus the only way to lower interleaving was to switch to the lower speed package.

Isn't fastpath the lowest interleaving level? I believe some people way back specifically requested that interleaving level and got promptly refused.

You are ona home package and not a business one right?

    +1
Although not as good as above, these are my pings on the 7.6mbit package with interleaving lowered, just ring them and ask for a technician to change it, mine were around 42-45ms to boards.ie before I got them change it. They can't turn interleaving off, but they can lower it individually for each line

Never judge by the speedtest.net ping times, these are all over the place sometimes, judge from command prompt only

You can get it changed on home or business packages on adsl1 tech. Your supposed to be able to get the changes done via other bitstream operators as well. You can't get interleaving lowered on adsl2+ packages on eircom exchanges currently.

Praetorian, nice pings. I asked they didnt know what i was talkin about. Then eventualy they said the did. And lowered it. But it didn't seem to change.

So i decided to change to 3mb instead. Its been 6 months.
ou can't get interleaving lowered on adsl2+ packages on eircom exchanges currently.

Mine is ADSL2+ enabled, but i dont get it. I get the adsl. so is that why the ping didnt lower?

Ok guys what do i ask eircom now?

Pings are the same. My parents live 3km further than me, and pings of 20ms on BT.

Since when were Eircom allowing people to ring up and ask for the pings to be reduced? I thought they used to completely go against it and wouldnt do it for anyone??

  • Registered Users Posts: 363 ✭✭Calebmcd

They tell me now, if i was on 7mb i could get low Interleaving. Last time they said that to but it didnt work. They said to if i was on 2mb the could make it better. If its not fixed when my contracts up, i'll change back to BT. They said call back in a few days if it doesnt get better.

My pings have actually gone up slightly. I might be going back to 7mb next week!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

We tried to tell You not to change, grass is always greener!! :D They weren't that bad to start, 30ms to boards.ie isn't that bad, I've seen much worse

Don't just ping readings from speedtest servers, these are all over the place, do them from command line. Changing to BT might not make a difference as they just resell Eircom bitstream. Are Your parents on the same exchange?

    Yes thats my point.

  • Registered Users Posts: 363 ✭✭Calebmcd

Got home today was getting pings of 45min 180avg 500max to boards.ie

So i've upgraded to 7mb again. So tomorrow i'll get my interleaving set to low again.

I dont understand though, why would a line connected to the same exchange except on BT instead of Eircom have lower pings. The BT line is 3.5km away from the exchange. The Eircom is 0.7km away. Yet the Min on the Eircom is 30-45(max isnt the same, unstable). And the BT has a stable min to max of 14-20.

The 7mb with low Interleaving was steady at 30ms across the board.
Do BT have diferent interleaving settings?

Every line is a totally different situation
