Thinking about it, it might be a better idea if people post their current rating and their lowest/highest ratings maybe to have a better idea about the player.

The point of the ladder is to make it more accessible to people who weren't in the league. There were quite a few people who wanted to get involved but were effectively frozen out because everyone was involved in the league. I think it's a little unfair to make those people start at the bottom if they're much better (like vettlefish for example). Also, everyone who was in the league should have a rating ridiculously close to their position and it is a better indicator of skill IMO

The more the better but try and get some games in if possible because you'll pick up a provisional rating.

Not sure what the point is in posting highest and lowest because the rating will be irrelevant after the first few games I'd say. It's just for the initial bracketing purposes and it seems like alot of work to combine the three to a score.

Also, how far do people think you should be able to challenge up and what about people who enter with a provisional rating during the ladder. Where should they be placed. I'd think that a glass ceiling for the top 5 from newcomers would be a good idea as well so that if someone had a high rating (say 1600) they do not just jump to the top of the ladder without playing the leaders

if it's a proper ladder newcomers should have to come in at the bottom! If you are saying newcomers should be able to challenge the 5th best player if they are high enough rated -- then why bother with the ladder at all? You could just use the RHP rating system.

The rating should just be used to give people their initial positions on the ladder, after that everyone should come in from the bottom imo.

However I'm not involved -- just saying what I think is fair.

The problem is that if someone like you wanted to play, with a rating that was much better than anyone else in the league itself they're really unlikely to want to start at the bottom and move up in 3s so they might just not bother.

This is the first ladder i've run though so i have no idea what people want unless they post it :pac:. Any ideas on new players and how many games you can play at once are welcome

How about getting a site-wide announcement like last time? Should help with the numbers.

As for new players, I do think they should come in at the bottom. I can't see a few games against plebs like me being a major obstacle to someone who is interested in playing.

I don't see any good reason why someone like me would want to play the ladder at all, or should be able to, if he didn't want to play a fair few lower rated players.

Maybe if you had 50+ in the ladder, working your way up in 3's would be a lot of games for anyone to play, especially if each game would take a month. But I definitely think everyone should have to work their way up from the bottom, maybe you can figure a way for it not to take forever.

Yeah, I've gotten a bit more into it, got my rating up to 1482 on RHP before getting lazy and going back down, around 1377 now but am learning steadily and working on my blitz rating on FICS, have a load of chess books and DVD's that I'm trying to get through and understand, have set myself a target of 1600 by 2010

Setting up a ladder or another league would be a good way of helping me achieve it. Playing tournaments and with clans on RHP but it's not quite the same.
