Has anyone in the last two/three days, noticed a dramatic difference/drop in their broadband speed.

I have noticed that for the last few nights, after 7.00pm at night, my internet speed drops seriously down, the next morning it might be back up again, it might not.
I've tested everything. Contacted BT who I am signed up with. They can find nothing. They have even tested, devices, house cables/wires/modems, the line and gone through every check possible.

The ONLY thing they can think of is that useless feckin' Eircom is doing something with phonelines somewhere, perhaps connecting them up to a new estate or changing lines, etc.

Has anyone noticed strange up's and downs in their speed this last few days in the Louth area?

It could be heavy traffic on the line, 7pm and people are home from work and kids on the net. Are you in one of the new 24MB trial areas ?

I have noticed it here in Dundalk for the last month or so.
I am on Eircom and the speed will go from fairly fast to so slow i give up and on occasion completely breaks down.
It seriously affects my skype webcam chats that happen around this time which is extremly frustrating.
I does seem to happen later at night - around 7/8pm i called eircom about it and just got put on hold and told they would look into it.

    Download the following file:

    ftp://ftp.esat.net/mirrors/.4/carroll.cac.psu.edu/Mandrakelinux/devel/iso/2007.1/mandriva-linux-2007-spring-free-mini.iso

let it download for 1 - 2 minutes until the speed steadys out and see what speed your getting.

I have 7.6MB with BT and I've just tried the above myself and I'm getting a transfer rate of 179KB/s. Speedtest result below is poor too, and on Eircom and Smart Telecom speedtests results are pretty much the same too, so something is going on.

I usually average about 7 megs when its running normally.
Just in the last few days its dropped to just under a meg at times. Weird.
BT say they haven't a clue but they are looking into it (They know I run a news site :D ).
