Many would question the idea of opening a new hi-tech nightclub in these days of depression. And many more would question doing it -- at a cost of €38m -- in an industrial estate in north county Dublin. But this is exactly what entrepreneur Michael Wright has done.

The Wright Venue in the Airside Estate in Swords will open its doors next month, with a capacity for an amazing 2,000 clubbers spread over four floors.

The group gave a sneak preview of the venue yesterday afternoon, showing off, among other things, its party spaces named New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. These all overlook the main dance floor from a gallery level and have been inspired by Michael's visits to various cities.

There's also a Live Room where acts will perform regularly, a Backstage Bar running the length of the venue, and a Penthouse, which they promise will be the ultimate chill out area. With nightclub king Robbie Fox's entertainment empire, which included the popular Renards nightclub, collapsing only a week ago with debts of over €6m, it must surely not be a great time for a new venture.

"There's always a level of nervousness and excitement with the opening of a new venture, whether it's in good times or bad times. But we feel that what we have to offer is very strong and we're not complacent at all.

"We will be employing over 150 people in the Wright Venue," said a spokesman.

INTERVIEWS are already under way to find the 300 staff who will run Swords' new Wright Venue, which is set to open its doors in less than three weeks.

The proprietors of the club, which will be known as WV, are recruiting approximately 100 fulltime and 200 part-time staff for its Airside premises

Bar staff, table staff, dancers and promotional staff have all been sought for the 40,000 sq ft purpose-built complex, on course to open on Friday, July 10th.

Stretching over three floors, the nightspot will feature a number of indoor and outdoor cocktail bars, private booths, a roof-top bar, a 300-person capacity live venue and five exclusive suites. The club forms part of a € 38million entertainment centre developed by the Wright Group, featuring a mix of nightclubs, restaurants and office space.

According to the owners, the complex will lead to the creation of 300 new jobs, between the club, an adjoining TGI Friday's outlet, restaurants and other units.

' The Wright's Venue offers a high degree of entertainment within one facility, for a diverse democratic profile,' a spokesperson said. 'It's not just a nightclub.

'We'll also have a live music venue, a penthouse bar and private function space available, while the rooftop bar will hold 600. There will be something for everyone.' The 80,000sqft scheme is located on a 0.74 hectare site, at the South Quarter, 100 metres from the Premier Inn, adjacent to Airside Retail Park.

A range of restaurants and related activities will be provided, with the well-known American chain, TGI Friday's, already confirmed as anchor tenants.

Two more large restaurants, a café, a possible off-licence and a 10,000sqft retail store will also open, along with some 30,000sqft of office space.

Negotiations are ongoing regarding future occupants and the developers added they were open to further discussions. The Venue will complement Wright's Café Bar, one of the key properties in The Wright Group's growing portfolio, which will continue to trade as normal in Swords

Anybody else hear that they are going to charge €15 into the place :confused:

Personally I cant see this place doing well, unless you live in Boroimhe its not really a handy place to get to. I can see this place open in a gush of publicity and it will die a painful death afterwards, its just not that accessible and any charge in fee will be its death knell surely.

Thats the going rate. Tomangos and that other hole in the Harp charge 15 in. I'd say it will do alright. I just hope they dont let any scumbags in. I doubt they will tbh.

"Situated in Airside's south quarter" :pac:

Makes it sound like something other than the retail park it is.

The place shouldn't have problems with accessibility. It's only a 10 minute walk from Swords main street. Plenty of bus routes will take you close to it and i presume an unofficial taxi rank will form outside it.

I doubt scumbags will be allowed in. I'll probably struggle to get in myself i'm guessing!

More than a 10 minute walk from Swords. I know what you mean about facing the door policy on this place. Being precious about door policy won't work in the world of 2009. It's not like it's situated in the middle of monte carlo no matter what they may like to think.

More than a 10 minute walk from Swords.

Not to mention crossing a dual carriageway with a few beers in ya. Froms wrights in the village, to the new one in airside, its a 17min walk going by google maps - 1.3km

I think its going to be a big fuss over nothing with this place, the phrase all fur and no knickers comes to mind

They'd have to do a courtesy bus from Swords Village and Malahide to get enough people in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

I think it's aimed more at people who travel to Swords for a night. I've met people from Coolock, Balbriggan, Blanchardstown, Drumcondra on a night out in Swords. These people will be getting taxis to/from Swords regardless and would prob just go there for the night.

The inside looks amazing but its just getting the right people in, or anybody in for that matter! It's a fair auld hike in heels. ;)

I was in there last night and got a tour. There are quite a few bars and the 4 'cities' rooms were special albeit at €1500 a night. Expensive birthday party!

The best bit was the Scarface Suite at the very top. I felt like a Las Vegas casino owner staring down at the dancefloor from there. Everything is done to the best quality.

It was fantastic getting to go to all the rooms because come Friday most punters will be restricted to the first and second floors.

I must be a quick walker! I wouldn't be bothered about a 20 minute walk myself but i guess it may put others off. Taxi drivers should be pleased.

Define "scumbags"? Dress code, age, or what?

    =-=

From what I've read, this looks like it plans to replicate the success of Time? Big nightclub, not in main city and thus little competition from other "big" clubs (by big, I mean more of the size, as opposed to the name).

In Time, the private areas were just off the main section, so people could filter back into the private sections, but also dance in the main section. Not sure what the layout in this place will be.

    /edit site came back up...

Looking at the site (it only just came back), I see people having no option but to get a taxi. I also see lots of people running across the duel-carraigeway to get to Swords village.

The "Special Taxi Fares" are a f**king joke. €8 to get there, €8 back, and that's before you count the €15 in? Saying that, €20 back to the city centre isn't bad, if that's what the cost will be after the nightclub... and not before it.

On the plus side, it's near a bus stop, but you'll have to splash out on getting a taxi home.

"Door Policy: 21+, Dresscode: Smart/Casual". As they list it I think they're allowed to stop under 21's in, but I see a lot of people shelling out money to get there, and then refused. Opening night won't be fun.

http://www.thewrightvenue.ie/2009/06/17/soft-opening-july-6th/ still has what looks like "filler writing".

The grand opening is tomorrow, the 10th July, it would seem.

    =-=

Here is how to get to it by bus. It's 5 minutes walk away from the bus stop. The 41, 41b, 41c, 33 and the 33a all go by this bus stop, going to and from Dublin.

The 33a does not serve this route.

LOL. Thats the problem, they seem to think its some sort of "exclusive" venue, seriously, WTF !

PMSL! FFS, they must have got an unemployed estate agent to write up this garbage.

Didnt realise those bins had the nerve to charge still, at a push I could believe Tamangos but didnt think people would be mad enough to pay to get into clubs, €15 is 2/3 drinks depending on your favourite tipple!

Surprised there wasnt planning objections if theres a nursing home beside it? Id say the 2 or 3 guests that stay in the hotel beside it each night will probably end up complaining too when they hear people roaring at 2am & pissing up against the reception revolving door :o

Its €4.80 to fart in a taxi these days so I could well believe it if they will charge €7-8 to get there from the main street. Do they think Swords and the surrounding areas are recession proof

I've no doubts it looks the part but I hope people bycott it for the pretentiousness its already sweating out into the B&Q carpark :D

That €1500 includes €750 worth of alcohol already behind the bar . My daughter works there :)

    33/33b bus.

Yeah, I don't know how it got planning permission with the Wintrop so close. ...Actually I do. Think of a politician with the same surname! ;)

The petrol station will start doing a roaring trade. Would not like to be that person working on their own when the club starts.

I'd say if you got yourself a chippy van and parked outside the venue or near it you'd do great business. I remember something similar when I went to Time.

    More negative dross from you.:(

Its a positive result for the entire area to have a club of this calibre open up.

Eh Boroimhe is not the only estate close by if you check your map of Dublin.

What about Drynam Hall, Waterside, Holywell etc

There will be a metro north stop a couple of 100 meters away also which will link in a large catchment area.

If it survives the next few years it may become a lively spot but at the moment after the first few months novelty factor is worn off people I fear it will struggle. Where are the clientele with disposable income going to come from? It seems to me like the club will be in direct competition with Wrights at The Plaza (amongst others) during its infancy which is strange. It's also all very well having facilities for live music but unless you've got the two main promoters on board your going to get middle of the road crap which won't pull the crowds.

I can really see the area around this place being a danger for late night violence - nowhere for people to go after, all waiting on taxis - thankfully the VHI Swift Care clinic is nearby ;)

Sure can't get for the grand opening with Cheryl Cole and Lady Gaga according to the conversation I overheard on the bus this morning :pac:

Ah would ya stop, Im not trying to be negative ffs, its just an opinion and some it is fact :)
Waterside is in "Malahide" FFS:p On a serious note, Holywell must be a good 20 min walk away, with Dynham Hall much the same. Waterside is an absoloute camel ride. Lets face it their target market is young ones and I cant see many birds with 6 inch heels on walking any further than back to the traffic lights at the airside junction. You are assuming all their punters will be more than happy to walk 20 mins +. Eh doubt it.

It's a "soft" opening tonight and tomorrow and the official opening is on the 23rd of this month.
The lady ga ga rumour is not true but apparently it will be pixie lott instead.

    insider information wink wink

Anyone who managed to get a sneak preview this week before friday was lucky as from tonight on regular punters will only have access to floors one and two and not be able to see the vip rooms (including the spectacular scarface room) or the top floor penthouse suite and outdoor rooftop bar and terrace.

Overall the venue is spectacular but as many people have said it remains to be seen whether it will succeed in the long term.
