Saying that. I still think that united should concentrate on tevez instead of ronaldo and that he causes upset in the dressing room is bollox.

    I apologise for the rest.

    No worries.
I don't know that Ronaldo is causing upset, it's just conjecture.
Every team has a star player but there's a thin line between admiring/respecting them and thinking they're a complete ass.
If I were on a team with someone like that I'd hate him.
I'd find it hard to imagine a scenario where at least a few of the United players don't dislike him.

Apart from that there's the issue of loss of control, if a manager lets that behaviour slide with one player
then resentment builds up when they don't let it slide with another player.

I probably could have worded my point about Tevez better.
It annoys me that he's somewhat under-rated by Ferguson.
IMO he's one of their best players (much better that Berbatov) and
    should be treated better.
The effort he consistantly puts in is tremendous.
Going back to the whole Real fiasco I think that Ferguson should have gotten rid if he was that desperate to go,
I think the whole thing set a bad precedent.
No player is irreplaceable, especially at a team like United.

O/T I'd go all out to keep Tevez and I'd ditch Berbatov,
City would probably still snap him up.

i dont think at 1 - 0 down to utd he would waste time by getting the physio on.

eh, United are in the final, when are we supposed to talk about it? That's why I said he may have just retained it

Also he already plays for the worlds best club and is also the world's best player so I don't know what that's supposed to mean. Madrid were interested in Jermaine Pennant earlier in the season, that's how desperate they are, not even Benitez would buy...oh wait.

Madrid might not win the league this year but over the past 5 seasons they have won the same as united.
No disrespect to United but Madrid are a bigger club, they draw better players and always have done.
Raul,Figo,Zidane,Ronaldo, even at the present height of the premierships popularity and wealth have we ever seen a team with 4 bigger players at the one time.

Ronaldlo is a world class player with a bit of an attitude, accept that and enjoy his performances

Messi is amazing but he hasn't proven himself against English defenses yet - it would be a risk.
    .

Yeah you are right, I am sure Messi would really struggle against Hull, Sunderland etc.

A non story. I can even remember Paul Scholes throwing a little hissy fit of his own after being subbed when he refused to sit with the rest of the subs and stood below the subs stand with his arms folded. That was Scholes FFS! Good players want to play and that is good to see.

sure my mates were at the Spurs game recently and they saw Scholes drive off as they were walking out of OT, said it must have only been 10 minutes after the game.

And with ROnaldo yesterday, he didn't seem in that bad a mood as he drove off, gave someone a thumbs up as he drove out.

5 pages in and the OP has yet to condemn all the other players mentioned who threw a fit when subbed, including Messi. Maybe I'm wrong but that stinks of a biased opinion towards Ronaldo.

The thread is for discussion about Ronaldo as he's probably the most prolific and talked about Premiership player.
It's clear from all my posts in this thread that I'm not just looking
for a platform to slate the guy.

But if you are basing the statement below on what happened yesterday then United should get rid of Rooney and Scholes for their tantrums. Barca should ship out Messi.
The guy seems to be highly ambitious. Maybe he had his mind set on trying to gain a better chance of winning the golden boot this year.
Also surely the United fans who want nothing but the best for the club would be the first to demand he go if they felt "United would be better off without him"

Well then he was a silly boy for signing a long term contract with United a year or so previous to last summer's events.

I do understand Ronaldo's desire, and I would not begrudge him a move there as long as it was done correctly and with respect for United and the United fans. This was not the case last summer.

You say you condemn any player who carries on like that, but you use the likes of Rooney and Messi as shining examples of how Ronaldo should act, it has been put to you that these 2 players act and have acted exactly like Ronaldo, as have several other of the top players in the world.

You move on to speculate that Ronaldo causes upheavel in the dressing room and unsettles the other players, think about that for a second and what United have acheived in the past 3 years.

Just because you throw in the odd sentance praising Ronaldo, does not absolve you from that platform you talk about.

You started the thread to have a pop at Ronaldo, pure and simple.

Personally I think all players should act like a Vidic or a Shay Given, but when you make teenagers millionaires and icons with little schooling, what the fúck do expect will happen?

Appartently Ronaldo is fantastic in the dressing room, in training and off the pitch with fans, with many stories of him been one of the more approachable "super stars".

He flirted with Madrid last year, as you say yourself it was probably his dream, but you still slate him for it.

Alas that happened last year, he has come out countless times since, even last week and stated the dream is dead and United is where he wants to be, but I didn't see that qouted in any of your "fair" posts.

As for Yesterday, if I were going for the golden boot and was taken off against a City team who realisticly I could have got a hatrick against, I would be upset too. Ronaldo is a winner, He suits United pefectly, maybe you just can't comprehend that, it's much like Fletcher the other day, there was no need to make that tackle, but Uniteds way is never to give an inch, I take my players freaking coming off the pitch every day, because I know the next day when they are on the pitch they will try that much harder.

    Good post...

    I accept what you're saying.
Nobody could deny how much the guy brings to a team.

I don't think I exactly called Messi or Ronaldo "shining lights",
more that I find their behaviour to be far superior on the whole.

Fair enough, people will pick up on Ronaldo's flaws more than most due to his having such a high profile.
However, I'm objective and I really can't think of another player who behaves so poorly.
The selfishness on the ball at times, the berating of his own players on the field,
the Real fiasco, the strops, the arrogance.

The reason I find his behaviour more objectionable than others is simply because I have witnessed more objectionable behaviour from him than others.
If I saw other players carrying on the same way to the same extent then my opinion of them would be the same.

I'll wait and see what happens over the coming weeks and throughout the transfer window.
If Ronaldo conducts himself better this time then my opinion of him will probably improve somewhat.

how about Barton - i'd say he is a LOT worse than Ronaldo.

    Is he still a player?

But in all seriousness I couldn't compare the two.
The criticisms of Ronaldo can't neccessarily be applied to Barton.
Similarly it would be unfair to compare Ronaldo to Barton, who is a mindless thug.
How many serious assaults has the guy been involved in?
    No team should touch him.
I'm all for second chances but he must be on his 5th.

In fairness to Ronaldo, he is not in the same league as Barton or others of his ilk. He's not a thug nor has he attempted to intentionally injure someone. He's aloof, a bit ignorant but not a malicious player.

    My two cents.

I'm not overly fond of the chap. He is the epitome of the modern day footballer, crass, spoilt, over-paid and arrogant. There's no denying his ability, I dont think that's in question here. I'm an Arsenal fan of 23 years and have no problem saying he was magnificent against us last week. My goodness though, his attitude is pretty appaling. He should have been sent off at least twice this season for kicking players who had the audacity to put a decent tackle in on him. His "I'm brilliant and I know it" attitude is what I think annoys people most. I think he's almost become too big for United (or for anybody really) judging by the way Fergie puts up with anything he does. For Fergie to constantly blame the press for the Madrid stories last year was grating, especially as it was Ronaldo himself who said he wanted to leave. Seems like he has a free reign almost.

As I said in my first post, its no wonder Fergie lets him away with what he does. A blind man can tell you who has been the MAIN driving force behind United current and successes of the past two seasons. Fergie knows this and is trying his best to keep Ronaldo on side. Any decent manager would do the exact same thing.

You're calling the most successful manager in the English game of all time someones beatch?
I think you'll find Fergie knows best how to deal with tempermental egos. Theres always a trade off between letting them away with so much and forcing them out the door.
In Ronaldos case, he is key to teams success and will get away with more than others but I am SURE there is a line.......

His attitude and arrogance can only have a negative effect on the dressing room and lead to upheaval from the other players.
I know he's one of the best players in the world but he's not that far ahaed of everyone that he's irreplaceable

His dispicable attitude is made look all the worst when contrasted to the likes of Rooney and others.

I know that this is far from an isolated incident but it's the most explicit that I've seen.

Man U would probably be better off concentrating on keeping Tevez than humouring this prima donna.

Whatever about how pointless this 'debate' is, how much he's singled out as a player, how boring it is to see the same thing over and over about him but if you are going to rehash the same monotonous mantra then at least use examples that help your cause.

Using Rooney as such was quite pointless since he acts similarly when being taken off when he's desperate to stay on. Exemplified by the fact of how often Ferguson mentions the fact of Rooney wanting to play every minute of every game and being disappointed when he doesn't. And that's just to mention his behaviour about the incident in question. As I'm sure you're aware Rooney is far from a saint in his normal behaviour on the pitch also. His work ethic is clearly better than Ronaldo's but then that isn't what's being debated here.

Same old story. With poor point of contrast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Rooney has done pretty much everything that Ronaldo has done, except for his work rate. That's a big difference, a desire to get back up and win the ball. Then again, Rooney is prone to losing his temper and getting booked/sent off. Something that Ronaldo rarely does to be honest [although he is prone to a kick out after a rash of tackles].

I can remember him diving, kicking out at players, losing his temper when subbed, all of these things. I wonder what the real issue is then?

True - which is how it has to be. Football has changed during his time as United manager, massively, and the way you treat players has changed as a result of that. Ferguson has shown a remarkable ability for man management and understanding of how to adapt his methods to the new style of footballer and individual footballers.

At best your a poor translator, at worst you're a troll.
Managers have changed a lot in the past 10 years. Fergie#s had to change to an extent, otherwise he wouldnt be the most successful/longest serving manager at the club now, would he?

He's an amazing player but a total twit, and a pretty funny one at that.

I realise that for many, a Man Utd player as skillful and arrogant as that leads down the road to blind rage but I urge all of you who hate Ronaldo to open yourselves up to the funny side of him.

He's basically just like a comic sports villian, you know, like Shooter McGavern from Happy Gilmore or Ben Stiller from Dodgeball. The face he puts on when he scores, the hilarious 'different' stance for free kicks, the tantrums ...comic genius!!!!! If Will Ferrel wrote a character like that, we'd all flock to the cinema to see it!!

As a player, he's second to none and I mean that. You could say that Messi's more skillful but Ronaldo equals his impact on the pitch and that's what counts. Utd are basically a really good squad and Ronaldo is the added X-factor that wins them the trophies. We had the same in Henry. People complain and say, 'oh he's not a big game player' or 'he could be better at this' but ultimately the sheer number of goals players like that create and score wins league titles.

Correct, he's better now than he was ten years ago.

Ten years ago his team won the Treble, and then went on to some relative mediocrity for a couple of seasons.

Last season he won the CL/PL and is now in the CL Final and is going to win his 3rd League in a row.

Also, at the start of this season when Queiroz left for the Portugal job people said that Ferguson wouldn't be able to handle the defesnive side of things, but then his team went and broke all kinds of defensive records.

He has kept Ronaldo at Manchester when for the whole of last Summer he was seemingly packing his bags for Madrid.
