Is it wrong that I'm getting bored of Bill Starr's Beginner 5x5 after just 3 weeks?

Squats and bench every workout gets tedious tbh

You'd think but it's not. Recovery seems to be a bit of an issue by the end of the week.

Throw up the template you're using, because that doesn't sound right to me.

As far as I remember, the beginner template was:

    Heavy Day:
    Squat
    Bench
    Row

    Light Day:
    Squat
    incline bench
    Power clean

    Medium Day
    Squat
    Press
    Deadlift.

With some accessory thrown in, can't remember the rep ranges for each day. When I did the intermediate template, recovery wasn't really an issue.

Here is the template - http://muscleandbrawn.com/bill-starrs-beginner-5x5-workout/

    Monday (Heavy Day – > 85%)
Back Squats: 5 x 5 Ramping weight to top set of 5 reps across 5 sets
Bench Press: 5 x 5 Ramping weight to top set of 5 reps across 5 sets
Deadlifts: 5 x 5 Ramping weight to top set of 5 reps across 5 sets

    Wednesday (Light Day – <70%)
    Back Squats: 5 x 5 using 60% of Monday’s weight
    Bench Press: 5 x 5 using 60% of Monday’s weight
Pullups: 5 x 5 Ramping weight to top set of 5 reps across 5 sets

    Friday (Medium Day – 70-85%)
    Back Squats: 5 x 5 using 80% of Monday’s weight
    Bench Press: 5 x 5 using 80% of Monday’s weight
Rows: 5 x 5 Ramping weight to top set of 5 reps across 5 sets

Heavy squats and deadlifts on the same day really don't sound like a great idea to me. But who am I to argue with Bill Starr? Having said that though, he did do many and varied updates to his original template.

Its actually not bad on the Monday cause you had Saturday and Sunday off. There does seem to be lots of different workouts from him with A, B and C versions.

As I said, I'm sure Mr. Starr know's what he's up to. I liked the heavy/light/medium arrangment because you're always making progress week to week but there's an inbuilt security to make sure you don't do anything stupid if you simply follow the program.

I'd stick with it for a while, let us know how you get on.

I think there was a method to it though. A strong squat should carry over to deadlift.

I squat a fair bit but don't deadlift much and I'd say there's 10-20kg between them. So not necessarily.

That's also not necessarily relevant to your point but there you go.

You squat a fair bit but deadlift rarely and they're still close. That's exactly my point. Your squat going up will drag your deadlift up with it.

I mean there should be more between them. If I did deadlift I'm sure there would.

Does that mean my squat will go bust soon? Maybe that's why socialists are better weightlifters

Yes, there would. But my point is that your squat increasing also keeps your deadlift ticking over. I am offically bamboozled by your response. Bamboozled.

Your squat is currently experiencing a bubble. A crash is inevitable, divest your interests into pressing and deadlifting to negate liability.

You just made the most common illusionary hedging mistake there. Youve created the impression of it but all his eggs still lie in the loaded barbell basket.

He needs to increase his holdings in bodyweight strength and step aerobics. Maybe some LIT too.

So Crossfit then. Hedging elite fitness.

I was going to start dieting in April with a calorie deficit. Do any of you recommend continuing on with the bill Starr program I posted and cutting the sets down to 2 at top weight or just change to a different routine?

I just want to keep some of the strength.

Really sore head today :( and I barely, barely ever get headaches.

Hoping it's not from caffeine withdrawal:eek:...had been experimenting with caffeine intake over the last few days..so if it's self inflicted that is even more annoying!
