they are goals to aim for.
not something you HAVE to achieve.

I havent achieved even one of them yet.

    BW 112kg
    Bench 105kg (target 112.5kg)
    DL - 190kg (target 225kg)
    Squat - 155kg (target 167.5kg)
    BW Dips - 7 (target 10)
    BW Chins - 4 (target 10)
Wide grip pull up - 0 (target 1)

they are goals i aim for, if i get them, great, if not, i keep working towards them

Very similar to my numbers except i can manage 1 pullup.

    bench 100kg (target 105)
    DL 220kg (target 250)
    Squat 160kg (target 170)
    Dips -lots >10 (no target)
    Pullups 1 (target 5)
bw 118 (target 110 then 100 and eventaully 93)..this is the biggie for me

Ahem - those lifts would classify you as advanced lifter (bench being 1.25 bw to qualify).
Theres only elite after that. How about starting at novice goals and then think about intermediate.
How to make a person feel bad!.

There's absolutely no way a 1.25x bodyweight bench makes you "advanced". Guys should be hitting that in <2 years training, if not a hell of a lot sooner!!

Liam, do you think 10 bw chins = 1 bw wide grip pull up?

Chins are easier... but not 10 times easier??

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Inspector Coptoor

the honest answer is i dont know as i cant do either.

You realise you have to go max out on wide grip pull ups to find out for us the exact ratio?!?!

Well, going from past experience 14 neutral grip chins matched up with 13 pull ups.

I don't see myself maxing out on these anytime soon.... not until xmas anyway. Sorry!

    BW Dips - 7 (target 10)
    BW Chins - 4 (target 10)
Wide grip pull up - 0 (target 1)

Thats what I would have thought, if the target on chins is 10 I would expect wide pullups to be ~7-8, thats what I would have been at. And I would have your target of dips higher, maybe 14dips being in the same range as 10 chinups, you are already at 7. I reckon I could do 20dips on parallel bars, and over 30 on right angle bars, which I find far more comfortable.

But it depends on how wide you call wide grip, I expect I could do maybe 15-16pullups, but I bet I could go wide enough so I could only manage 1. Why have you only wide pullups as a target? if you can do 4 chins I would expect at least 1 normal pullup, then begin to go wider each time as a progression. I would highly recommend trying negative chins & pullups too.

i mean super super wide grip pull up.
as in hands as wide as they;d be as the widest part of the bar in a regular lat pull down.
    its just a goal.

I can do about 2-3 narrow grip pull ups.
i was doing band assisted pull ups and chin ups but am going to start doing 10 sets of 2 negative weighted pull ups now for the next few months and see if i can improve my BW work.

10 is the goal for the dips at the moment but yeah, its a moving goalpost, once i hit that it;ll be 15 then 20 etc

He did a gag about a full Irish breakfast- "tubes of pig, slices of pig, some fungus and a chicken's period". Thought you'd nicked it.

    Informed Performance's strength standards:

    Bench Press- 1.25xBW
    Pull ups- <80kgs 15+, >80kgs 12+, >100kgs 8+
    Push Ups- 50+ in 60s
    Inverted rows- 30+ in 60s
    Trap Bar deadlift- 2xBW

These are all linked together, particularly the push ups and inverted rows, to create balanced targets. Once you hit these we start to move on to more individual goals.

    15 pull ups (8)
    25 dips (12)

i remember i realised that too. still eat them though, sure its only menstruation, perfectly natural.

my only goal is to see man city win the league before the arabs do a legger.

Is there any similar strength standards for bodyweight exercises, I have seen many military PFT ones but I am thinking of empirical ones done for different bodyweights. A lot of the figures quoted above have higher deadlifts than me, but lower dips/chins, but most of the guys are heavier too. It would be interesting to see where the crossover point is in the average person. e.g. would a 8 stone scrawny lad be expected to do more chins if he packed on a stone of muscle?

I keep thinking I am not progressing in pullups & chins much but I am heavier than I was a year ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Inspector Coptoor

well then id say you are progressing if you are effectively doing pull ups with more weight.

Good lifts but you don't say how long you have been at it and how many reps you can lift those for.

I'm at this game three yrs.
    BW 93kg
Incline Bench (cant do flat due to collar bone injury) = 87.5 for 5 - no spotter.
Harder than FB so I'd prob manage an increase of 25% if I could do FB.

Squat = 115kg for 5 (got skinny legs)
    DL = 182.5 for 5 - and that's only if rested.

had plateaued for a year. only starting to move again now.

    see joe the santa's reply.
The figures are closer to my guides esp on bench. less so on squats.
The percentage is higher the lighter you are.

You might get near there in 2 yrs but go nowhere for the next.
Congrats - you are advanced. take a bow.

I'm lifting properly for about two years now.
all weights mentioned above are for 1 rep. I thought that was a given.

    rep maxes are
    bench - 92.5kg x 5
    DL - 165kg x 5
    Squat - 130kg - 5
    Overhead press - 60kg x 8

    your 182.5kg x 5 is impressive
