Well done Toon. Hopefully that'll see Hull down.

I think they will stay up. Confidence will be restored now. That makes a massive difference to a team.

Delighted for Newcastle, well deserved win too. I said last week that I thought there was a good chance of them staying up. One more point will do it imo, I can't see Hull getting anything from their last two games.

I somehow doubt it. Stephen Taylor just after been interviewed saying that Newcastle "deserve" European football.
I'm sorry but if you're embroiled in a relegation battle you don't "deserve" anything, not least European football.
He's a local lad so that probably explains the delusion.

Great entertainment, but it was easy to see why both these teams are where they are in terms of the quality on show.

Felt Duff and Huth turned in the most complete performances on either side. Huth in particular had a monster game.

great result for newcastle although how boro didn't score more is beyond me..
several times their players were in prime postitions to score and instead crossed.
so Hull have Bolton & Man Utd left.
    Boro have Villa+ West Ham.
    Sunderland have Portsmouth & Chelsea.
West Brom have Liverpool & Blackburn.

If we beat Fulham next Sunday then we're safe..
If not it's still squeaky bum time

yeah of course i have. I keep saying Hull are not going to get anything out of their last 2 games, i was saying last 3 when they had 3 left, Stoke was the one with most hope for some points and they never showed up. Newcastle don't need anything after tonight if that is the case.[/quote]

In that case if Boro get 4 points from their last 2 games, newcastle are down.

Would be funny if United won the league against Arsenal, and played the kids against Hull, who beat us, sending Newky back down :pac: Oh Newcastle fans would be irate..... it would be funnehhh.... :pac:

good game. very exciting stuff. newcastle deserved the victory for sure. if they get a good spine in their team and shift some dead weight they can do better next season.
a change in attitude is essential too

    A huge huge game tonight,

Honestly i believe this is the one that will decide who stays up, I've said it before in another thread that i think the winner of this game will stay up,
If it finishes a draw, it will all remain as it is regards the bottom 3.

I don't see Hull winning any more points this season, away to Bolton or Home against Man Utd,

If Newcastle win at all tonight, they will move ahead of Hull on goal difference, Boro need a 2 goal margin to go dead level with Hull, 3 or more to be sure to move ahead of them,

    As it stands Currently:

    league.jpg

As i see the remaining results:

    Hull:
    Bolton (a) L
    Man Utd (h) L

    Newcastle:
    Fulham (h) L
    Villa (a) L

    Boro:
    Villa (h) L
    WestHam (a) L

So i can't see any of these teams winning a game after tonight.

Lets hope the match delivers, and that it doesn't end up a draw, it has all the pre match potential to be a thriller.

Best of luck to fans of those involved, i'll be hoping for a Newcastle win, for Mr. Shearer alone.

I'd be very suprised if all 3 teams lost both their games tbh.

Generally teams at the bottom go down fighting.

Hull play united and the league could be wrapped up so fergie will put out reserves I'd imagine with CL final 3 days later. Hull imo have the easiest run in. Only problem for Hull is, they are useless

Even if Newcastle do survive, is shearer the man for the job? I expected some bounce of form from this team when he came to the job but for the team to score only one goal until tonight doesnt really inspire confidence does it.

From what i've seen of Hull & Boro they don't have much to offer even fighting,

United reserves would still see off Hull, they have seen off better and some players might be still fighting for a place on the bench in that CL final.

Boro's defense is very weak, Villa somewhat and West ham will still have something to play for.

West Brom are as good as gone,

    all my opinion of course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,001 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Its believed that the club will be sold this summer regardless of what league they are in. Ashley wants out and the Toon want him out.

There has to be a huge clearout of players, there are a lot of players there on big money and at the end of their careers who don't have the hunger and are happy to pick up their fat pay cheques.

I don't know if Shearer is the right man for the job but you can't predict it on what goes on this season as he has inherited a pretty hopeless outfit and cannot bring in players. Best to judge him next season when he can put the team together as he wants it.

They have to play a Liverpool who could very well be dejected at half time if they find out United have won the league and a Blackburn team with nothing to play for. They could still end up on 37 points which might see them safe IF Newcastle and Hull don't get another win.

    Stranger things have happened.

IMO this is far from over. It's possible that United could be already champions by the Hull game, and if they are, I'd wager the average age of the squad will be like 17.

Blackburn could still finish as high as 11th, not much of a chance with them playing Chelsea,

but with half a million difference between each finishing position, for a team like Blackburn 2 million is a lot to play for.

Strange things do happen, and West Brom have been invloved in strange things before.

Delighted, absolutely delighted! Thought we looked something like a team tonight. I was very worried after 8 mins though, things were going against us (unfortunate OG and hitting the post) I thought that Shearer got the subs spot on today. Jonas and Owen were not playing well IMO. Great for him that the two replacements scored but irrespective they were the right changes to make. I thought Bassong and Guthrie and of course the Duke had decent shifts! We are by no means safe though. If we get less points than Hull playing an already on holiday Bolton side we are in big big trouble!

Felt sorry for Boro tonight, thought they played their part and on another day could have won. Really gave our defenders a hard time tonight. Hope ye can stay up, not at our expense of course! They can feel really pissed if you look at this http://www.jeffwinterentertainmentandmedia.co.uk/loi/0809000i.htm

For the club definitely but for the players? Few weeks wages for quite a few of them.

Back from the pub. Great laugh with all the Toon fans who were out. I know we're not entirely safe but tonight was a real kick start for us and we looked like a good solid unit out there tonight.

NewCastle deserved it, Martins is epic class!!! Sound dude!

Viduka and Bassong looked great yesterday. Looked like they were both enjoying their football.

I wouldn't be surprised if Owen is dropped for the match against Fulham at the weekend. Viduka and Martins seem to play well together.

I reckon we could get one more year out of him. We need to have someone like him though. Someone who can hold the ball well, is strong and has a decent first touch. Some of his touches last night were sensational.

I didn't pay much attention to the match yesterday, but what i noticed was immediately he was subbed(Martin's) the game changed(goal).
Owen is good but sometimes i wonder if he's fit and focused enough to play...

Ah to be fair he needs to find himself a club in the summer!!!!! Wouldn't want to ruin his career at the next club by injuring himself playing for another team. You can understand surely! Not like he's getting 100k a week or anything!

Lack of form since the contract was "put on hold" a coincidence???? My ar*s, shoulda Fcuked off to city in Jan

your probably right. but hes a high profile signing. Even if his ability/drive is in question at the moment. Signing him may make others think about signing...

Well if he wants out he should be performing to the best of his ability until the end in the hope that clubs will be interested in signing him. Too late for him now I think. We don't need high profile signings.

As Charlie said in the Newcastle Team Talk thread I think, we need players who are willing to work their socks off for the team week in, week out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,407 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

If Newcastle want to seriously progress in the coming seasons, they need to be offloading the likes of Owen (along with Butt, Geremi, Viduka [one swallow does not a summer make], Smith, Barton, Martins and some more probably), and bringing in players of a completely different experience level and mindset as a priority.

Owen is on an unstoppable downward trajectory. At his best, his game was based on acerbity of thought being allied to phenomenal pace and agility. That physical quickness and sharpness won't be coming back anytime soon, which means he won't be revisiting the glory days of his career anytime soon.

Some club will take a punt on him though, no doubt about that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

I agree about offloading some of the high paid donkeys but I'd like to keep Martins. I think he brings excitement to the team when he plays.

If Shearer is in charge next season I reckon his main focus will be on defence particularly left back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,825 ✭✭✭Healio

Martins is nearly the only player i'd keep.

Viduka gave his performance of a lifetime the other night, still though i wouldnt be signing him on for anymore.

Butt, I'd take another year out of; he will not be getting any better, but his attitude this seasin has earned him at least another year.

Owen is out the door, unless the unlikely happens and nobody wants him, I'm sure a career in Parkhead will suit him down to the ground.

The rest on the can **** right off, geremi, smith (forgot he was even there),

I'm not sure on Barton; it looks as if he tried to engineer a move when our future looked bleak, and perhaps he intentionally went for the red card to burn his bridges so to speak: the big story after he got out of prison was that he "owed" the newcastle fans an awful lot, then a broken metatarsal, and the team spiralled downward, he may have thought to himself "**** this" and the best way to get out is to get on the wrong side of the fans, what better way than a red card in a must win match.

Colocinni is a no-no for me, Bramble looked safer in defence, and with Gutierrez I have my doubts, he is all grand when we are on the attack, but he is awful in defensive mode.
