As LTTE mortar fire kills many

Defense sources have reported in that over 1000 civilians broke out of the conflict zone at the Mullaittivu end over 24 hours, ending noon, May 11. The LTTE sentries, initially overwhelmed, recovered and opened fire on the fleeing civilians.

The sentries were then heard on intercepted radio communications calling the LTTE command centre for reinforcements. The LTTE responded with mortar fire which fell within the conflict zone. Around 250 were injured or killed due a combination of fire opened by LTTE sentries and mortar fire. However, more than 750 managed to make it out to safety. At least 250 others escaped through different passages.

The doctors in the conflict zone were heard on intercepted communications saying that they had no facilities to treat the badly wounded numbering about 250.

The incident was widely reported in the international news media quoting a website well known for Tiger disinformation, accusing the government forces of killing civilians. A health official who is reportedly in the Tiger controlled was quoted by the BBC as having said that so far 378 civilian have been killed by shelling from the Sri Lankan army. Sources in Colombo said that the health official is in no position to give an independent account as he is virtually another captive of the TigersVideo footage showing civilian casualties that claimed to be taken in the civilian safety zone (CSZ) in the Vellamullai Vaikkal, in Sri Lanka are being often aired by many international media. Voices that said to be from pro LTTE sources are being heard blaming the government for constantly shelling the civilians.

However, there is ample evidence suggesting that LTTE has been taking the whole world for a ride with its well engineered propaganda ploys.

According to the defence.lk special correspondent at Karayamulli Vaikkal, five LTTE cadres including four child soldiers surrendered to Army 53 Division this morning (Apr 11) have revealed that LTTE had brutally crushed several civilian attempts to seek refuge with the armed forces during the weekend.

“We were given orders to shoot anyone, even at our parents if they dare to seek refuge with the soldiers, leaving LTTE leader unsafe” a 16 year old child soldier among the surrendered said.

“Yet, we did not want to do that, we saw senior LTTE cadres firing shells and machine guns at boats carrying large groups of women and children on Saturday morning (Apr 9), many had died” , the boy further went on to say.

A 23 year old youth, the eldest among the surrendered told that he decided to dessert the outfit with the younger ones, after witnessing the carnage on Saturday.

“I could not guess how many died. I could no longer stand this treachery against my very own people…, so I decided to quit

You have a link to the original article?!?

    **EDIT**
Found an article on Al Jazeera, which says they can't verify either sides story, as the Sri Lankan government have banned the media from the area, which make them look bad more than anything else.

Anyway here is the article in question:
    Sri Lanka 'shells rebel hospital'

Sri Lankan government forces have been accused of shelling a hospital, killing at least 47 people and wounding more than 50 others.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and medical sources said the makeshift hospital in Mullivaikal was hit by artillery fire early on Tuesday.

Civilians who had been injured in attacks over the weekend were among the dead.

The claims and counter-claims are impossible to verify as reporters and aid groups are banned from the area of fighting.

Thurairaja Varatharajah, a government health official at the hospital, told the AFP news agency that the admissions ward had been hit by a mortar shell.

He expected the toll to rise because many of the wounded had head and stomach injuries.

Seems clear that both sides need to stop fighting, as otherwise more innocent people will die, but I doubt either side cares about them much.

Yes, shame on Wes for putting people dying to the forefront of his mind now and again.

Come on, Wes. There are a lot more important problems than Sri Lanka to worry about.

Exactly, we have to end apartheid for one. And slow down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world hunger. We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people.
