Suggestions for making a pair of front garden gates

    [Lets see how this goes a la Misschipp's comments on projects:) ]

    Opening is 260 cm wide, piers are only 90cm high so not straight forward.

    Will get the sprung wheels to support the front as they open and close.

    Have second hand 6" by 3" posts as well as some second hand 7" by 2" planks, all of which I can plane to clean up.

    Will get the timbers pressure treated once all the joints are made.

    Ideally the design should not allow any water to lodge and not provide access for the grandchild to climb up:)

    Thinking M and T joints for the frame: looking for ideas on size of top and bottom rail as well as how to make it strong.

    If you're not too much of a purist a galvanised steel flat would make a good diagonal brace and prevent sagging. Jockey wheels are a must, other than that...

    Thanks, or even a galvo'ed threaded bar through a pair of exposed angles:)

    A garden gate.... does it have a concrete apron for the wheels to travel on ?

    260 cm is a big opening for a wooden gate. Consider the weight of the material involved just in the frame alone, then add the weight of the boards used as a skin.
    Maybe time to think about double gates - a 130 cm gate is a manageable weight wise.
    What type of hinges are you thinking of?

    Mortise & tendon gets a thumbs up.
    Have you put a cap on the piers yet?
    Through post or set-in pier square grudgeons and 600 mm straps.
    May be over built but it will sure help with the gate swingers. :D
