3G - you will be lucky to get dial up speeds, and if you go over your cap expect your wallet to be raped

ripewave / clearwire, hit and miss, if you are lucky you will get a good solid connection, if not the back to intermittant dial up type speeds

both the above are rate adapative , the maximum bandwidth advertised is for the total for everyone on the cell , not per person. Also the bandwidth is shared by time so if you have someone connecting at a slower speed from further away where the signal is weaker then they will take the same % of the over all bandwidth as someone on a faster connection, except they will be transferrring 100% of the time since the connection is so slow, 3G means that many of the users are maxed out all the time.

the above are only if you need mobility over reliability or speed or have no other way - satellite is more expensive again and you aren't out in the sticks

look at the midband forum too

also look at http://fon.com in case a neighour is sharing wifi, this will be much faster and more reliable than above, if not you can mount an usb wifi card outside and an extension to make it more reliable

upc/ntl will charge you €6 for cable rental, so for €28 you get 3Mb rock solid connection
