please explain the lovely statement you jst made!

Well, the contribution by digital was quite obviously a piece of blatent electioneering, dressed up originally as a post of an interested voter. Crass!

I'm not hiding it at all.

I think... no! I know he is without doubt the best man for the job.

The first message on this thread was a simple question. Regardless what my beliefs are, I answered that question.

I should also state that I am not a representative of Ken O Heiligh nor have I been requested by anyone to respond either formally or informally to this discussion. I found it while googling something entirely different this morning but felt that my contribution would add something to it.

Furthermore, I welcome your passion it responses however you may consider directing them to something more constructive? You seem to have a great grasp of local politics. Regardless if you agree with my views on it or not, you should make yourself known. People in Drogheda and across the entire country are crying out for help in deciding who to vote for tomorrow. If you know about this topic, speak out positively.

I can’t remember who said it but I heard saying ages ago that was something like: "an encouraging whisper is more powerful than an angry shout."

A lot of people, me probably included love complaining in this country. We love to shout from the roof tops how life is unfair, the government doesn’t represent us properly, the weather is horrible because it's cold and raining, the weather is unbearable because it's too hot, the banks are in a shambles, that person has a green car, no matter what it is, we complain. What's even more frustrating is when someone stands up and tries to do something about it their accused of doing it for their own benefit! Tell me this, what benefit is an independent getting out of being a councilor when they as just one example pay for their entire election campaign out of their own pockets? Let me be very clear here, I'm not speaking about one specific independent. I'm complementing every independent across the country. Their people like you who have problems just like everyone else but instead of sitting behind a keyboard complaining, they’re out there trying to do something about it. Oh, and let’s face it! There really not benefiting either. Most independents work much harder for what they accomplish because they don't have the backing party members have.

BTW", on a separate note, I haven't found much literature online at all for Drogheda candidates running in tomorrow’s election. Other than Ken, who else provides their policies and previous goals in large print, Braille or electronic format? That is not a stab at anyone. I ask out of interest as someone has asked me to find out.

Once again, it is not my intention to plug a candidate or to use this blog to influence for a particular candidate/party. This has been an unwelcome intrustion on behalf of Mr. Whatsisface. Up to now, we've been having a good old fashioned piece of begruggery, and can't ye blame us? Look at the state of the place..... Just as important as who to vote for, who not to vote to vote for.....

    Predictions:

    North

    Nash (Lab)
    Munster (SF)
    O' Dowd (FG)
    Wilton (SF)
    Bell Woods (Lab)
    Gallagher (Socialist)

Outside chance : Callan. Will someone please switch off the town lights if this happens

    South

    Bell (Lab)
    Whatsisface (Ind)
    Coogan (SF)
    O' Donoghue (FG)
    Maher (FF)
    Byrne (FF)

    Outside chance: Culhane

As long as the LAB crowd don't get up to their usual stunts (as in Mayoralty pacts, etc) , that puts the smaller parties in charge and a chance for the town.....

Good luck with the voting folks and bye for now......STM

Don't ya think Shanks has an outside chance!!??

I think Tommy Byrne might struggle to hold onto that seat. After all the whining he did about FF when he was an independent!! Once his gap-toothed son showed the average IQ of East Meath is less than the sum the digits on my hands and toes by getting elected - IMO- he was rubbing himself up against the party like a warty hooker trying to get back into the party. Shameful. Hope the electorate over the faaaaaaa-side can do something to redeem their dignity. Though saying that, they'll be out in their droves voting for Tommy Byrne TD for Europe (best keep the embarrasment local I say). Anyone who voted for him and saw his performance on Vincent Brown last week should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. - running on a positive engagement with the European Parliament ticket he said, to which VB retorted, Has anyone ran on an negative engagement ticket?!!

STM - I agree about Callan, there could be a mass drowning if that robot gets in.

Stopthemuppets, just a little note to say that not everybody who posts here in support of a candidate, happens to be that candidate. Stop accusing people of doing so or you can take a break from the discussion. Thank you.

I find using the Cloud theme seems to help filter out a lot of junk.;)

Best of luck at the polls tomorrow all!

And since you haven't taken the friendly warning, you can have a 7 day break.

I agree my friend re: Byrne and I'm keepin' me fingers, toes and gonads crossed that he fails miserably. Not only is FF Capone party,he's had more (political) makeovers than Michael Jackson!

If anyone sees a beaten man with horse, cart and his worldly possessions making a slow, winding route up the Dublin Road on Sunday then you know Callan got in!

And, no, Shankers hasn't a hope in hell of gettin his deposit back, though I wish the man all the best....

A bit silly that, given that th election is practically over. A bit like been thrown out of the party after all the drink is gone! Daft! FF dead, blueshirts on the rise, Lab totally misguided. I'm worried!

This site existed before this years elections and will continue to exist for many more to come. Rules and guidelines are in place to make such a massive site work better, so its irrelevant that the election is nearly over, Stopthemuppets can't toe the line so therefore has to excluded.

Interestingly, I have the following observations after this mornings vote at around 7:15AM in the primary school on Priests lane.

    1. The Clerk had no idea what to do when faced with a blind person who wanted to vote. Even though I had someone with me who actually marked the paper for me, He was completely unaware as to how to direct me to the balett box. Sounds simple, but jesturing to a blind person to show him where the box is doesn't really work because um, I cant see him!

    2. There was no wheel chair access into the school. There is a ramp at the side door however there is still a step after this so it's kind of pointless. The makeshift ramp that was made available for anyone who needs it is unsafe in my opinion.

As usual, the staff have absolutely no awareness training. I'm not just talking about my experience here. I'm talking about how they should attempt to help people with disabilities or even elderly people who may need that extra assistance filling out their vote or even with something as simple as placing it into a balett box.

I'm not just picking on this one school either. I've had this issue every time I've voted in other areas of Drogheda.

Sorry to hear that DigitalDarragh. Surely Poll clerks should be instructed on such things...maybe you could get Ken O'Heiligh on the job, from what you say he would get it sorted!!

Final three candidates elected for Drogheda North.

    Ged Nash (Lab)
    Kevin Callan (FG) :pac:
    Michael O' Dowd (FG)
    Dom Wilton (SF)
    Imelda Munster (SF)
    Frank Gallagher (SP)

Glad to see the other Frank G got in. Poor old Shanks. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 377 ✭✭garrincha62

Poor old Shanks indeed. Hope he got enough votes to get his deposit back!!!

What do these elections say about the north side of Drogheda?
    1. Droghedeans do like the murky politics of the Shinners with some-time barber, DJ & serial local paper saturater Dom Wilton getting re-elected. Droghedeans apparantly like electing folk that don't let the facts get in the way of a good argument. The scarliy named Imelda Munster also getting in.

    2. Drogheda folk think that a new face of the same old same old will bring about change. Enter the robotic Kevin Callan, who should be in a good position to hoover up business cards and network.

    3. Drawda like a good protest vote. Labour topping the poll. Well deserved in Nash's case. One wonders whether the good showing for the Labour pary would transfer if a general election was called in the morning.

    4. Frank Gallagher got in despite being late with his posters and having the misfortune to look like a corpse. Lack of funds thwarting a colour poster campaign no doubt. The only thing I heard about this guy from anyone was the "My mam said he didn't finish school you know". Ah Drawda.

    5. Fianna Fail got wiped out until the next election when the chances are that some more gombeen clones will get elected because "They deserve another chance" or "They are young" will no doubt prevail. Sure my Da votes Fianna Fail(Fine Gael), as did his da and his father before him. So on that basis I am going to ignore all the evidence that is telling me that this might not be the smartest idea ever and vote Fianna Fail(Fine Gael) anyway, then I'll probably head to mass.

    6. Frank Godfrey should have a statue beside Socks and the handball guy. The man is an institution. Hard luck Shanks. No doubt it was all these blow-ins that did for you in the end...

garrincha62, apologies in advance if this is too personal, but purely out of curiosity, you mentioned you are blind in the earlier post - just wondering what type / level of blindness do you have? :)

Not at all Positron. I'm not blind, though maybe a little myopic in my political views. Can't see the wood for the trees etc and so forth... I think it is Digital Darragh who is blind.

siralansapparent, have you not seen the swathes of dispairing families shuffling away to pastures new?
Have you not smelt the warm toner of freshly printed business cards as the local traders association prepare to grease the palms of the careerist C&C junta?
Is there any difference between them? Have they been spotted in the same place at the same time? Maybe some building contractors will be able to tell us in the near future.

I have had enough. I think I will emigrate.

I agree. Evil takes many forms, the most common being the twin form.

Write off Frank "Lazarus" Godfrey at your peril.:D
Elected to Louth county council on the 9th count.

Also, you can add schizophrenic to your description of Drogheda voters. J Carrol of Fianna Failure couldn't get a seat in droghea North, but is elected on the first count in Drogheda East despite the two constituencies having a sizeable overlap.

Even more reason for a statue to be commissioned!!! Just imagine Shanks beside our Olympians, wisps of hair blowing in the breeze, outdated suit, neck undone circa Joe Dolan Paddy's Day 2008. Powerful.

He could be mounted on a plinth bearing the the thoughts of his most treasured political philosopher, Thomas Aquinas, whom he regularly consults and muses publicly over when he holds court.

"In synthesizing Christian theology and Peripatetic teaching, my philosophy dovetails nicely with Aquinas, who contends that God's gift of higher reason, coupled with divine virtues and human law, provides the foundation for righteous government. Will you give me your No.1?"
