Sounds good - will have to pop in and try it out. Good to see more options coming into pubs rather than Bulmers or Kopperburg.

Has anyone ever determined for definite whether or not Bulmers is suitable for vegetarians?

Have looked it up on the web but the Bulmers that they refer to in lists is the British one.

Wait wait wait! Why isn't cider suitable for vegetarians? Teh bacterias? Damn them to hell!.

Really I don't care about cider though.

Edit: I do realise bacteria aren't animals, that was a joke.

I sent them an email a few years back and they told me Bulmer's Cider was not suitable for vegetarians. Can't remember the specifics and the email has since been deleted (grr h*tmail). Maybe it has changed since then.

Bulmers Light is also not suitable for veggies or vegans but good news - Bulmers Pear is.

    ***edit***

    Just found this (thanks Monellia)
    http://www.barnivore.com/beer/Bulmers%20Irish%20Cider?keyword=bulmers,
    from only 7 months back.

Considering Bulmers Pear was launched here in March but I've a very strong feeling that it was launched in the U.K. before that (maybe, even the end of last year), this might require a bit more digging.

    Arse.

Yes, I'd heard that about Bulmers Pear. Supposidly it says that about "suitable for V+V" on the bottle's label. Am surprised about normal Bulmers not being veggie.

Apparently gelatin is used in the filtration process, but they claim that there is no gelatin in the final product

Here's a handy link for y'all - list of popular alcoholic bevs which are vegan-friendly: http://www.barnivore.com/

I think a lot of regular apple juice is not suitable for vegans. I think many use similar methods of clearing cloudy juice as they do for yeast filled brews. i.e. finings from fish isinglass or gelatine
    6. What are the ingredients / from what is Bulmers Pear made?
Bulmers Pear is made from 100% quality Pear Juice. The Bulmers Pear recipe is a safely guarded secret.
I find this quite misleading, it came up in the booze forum. The juice in the drink is 100% pear, but it is not made from just pear juice, i.e. they really brew up water & sugar and could technically have 1% pear juice in it and this statement would hold true.
Bulmers Pear contains a significant level of high quality, pear juice
"significant" is a meaningless marketing word, like fresh or healthy.

What sickens me is the marketing campaign that mocks other misleading ads! Cheeky feckers.

Apparently gelatin is used in the filtration process, but they claim that there is no gelatin in the final
So it means animals were in the processing of the product but you are not ingesting them. I presume most vegans would avoid this. But do any products make a point of vegan packaging? or do you know of any non-vegan packaging? e.g. I expect some beer labels on bottles might be using glue with derived animals. Or maybe in the ink or something.

From this website http://www.foodreactions.org/intolerance/alcohol/index.html they mentioned that egg may be used in alcohol, as well as the isinglass:
Furthermore, "fining agents" may be used to remove particulate matter. These include the use of egg protein in some wines or seafood proteins to fine some beers.

Interesting, especially to those who have egg intolerences.

Rule of thumb - if you have a food intolerance, avoid everything where you cannot clearly see all the ingredients!

So can I drink normal bulmers or not, is there any recent documentation? i didn't check all the links above yet. I may have to email them. Guess it may be jameson and orange juice for me here on in.

Rubadub mentioned glues and ink, that is very hard to get information about! I mean all vegetarian runners or whatever product that need glue, you can't jsut see some nice runners and ask them is the glue used vegetarian friendly. :)

Hearing about all that makes me happy to say i dont like cider:P Its nice to see that there are alot of beers and some ciders veggies and vegans (without intolerance) can drink:)

I'd never read up on beers, especially cider, about whether they were vegetarian friendly or not.. found this list after some searching. It's just beers though, no ciders.

    http://www.gonchong.co.uk/vegbeer.html

Also, this is a bit painful on the eyes when trying to read. I haven't looked through it properly but it gives a big list of alcoholic beverages that are suitable with email confirmation from the producers.

I have, on occasion, been indulging in Weston Organic Cider that I was abel to get in Tesco but they have stopped carrying it. Anyone know who else may carry it. It is vegan.

Confimed this is not vegetarian, so no more of that for me.
Just to let ye all know. Pear apparantly is.

    Hmm,

I'm a bit concerned about the Bulmers Pear Cider, since it's really apple cider, flavoured with pear, as opposed to a proper perry. It does however say "suitable for vegans and vegetarians". So, do they get in non-isinglass-fined apple juice separately to make the cider for pear cider? Dunno. Should ask but have other stuff to do. :o
