We're delighted to be able to work with the inspiring Irish charity Barretstown and help bring their magic to more people.

    About Barretstown:

Barretstown is a castle in Co Wicklow where children with cancer and other serious illness go for some serious fun. The children and their families, from Ireland and 22 European countries, take part in a unique programme recognised by the medical world as playing an important part in their recovery from serious illness.

Barretstown provides a programme of adventure, activities and fun which helps children with serious illness regain their confidence and self-esteem.

You can find out more on their website here and/or watch the 4 minute video A journey through Barretstown.

    Send More Families

An important part of this year's campaign for Barretstown is their SEND MORE FAMILIES project with Avonmore. When a serious illness affects one child, the whole family is affected. This year there's a simple way for everyone to do something exciting to help raise much needed funds - The 'Avonmore Big Picnic for Barretstown'/

The whole goal is to raise €2,000,000 for Barretstown so that lots more families can benefit. All funds raised will go directly to Barretstown and will help the thousands of children and their families who visit their camps every year.

All details are on the Send More Families website.

    Why Boards.ie is involved:

We have long been supporters of Barretstown through our Santa Strike Force campaigns. When Barretstown contacted us to ask if we could give them a space on Boards.ie, we were more than happy to help out.

    About this forum

We invite people who want to know more, who have benefitted from the help that Barretstown has provided and those who have volunteered - like me - to talk about Barretstown, to share stories and memories, to suggest ideas and organise fundraising events.

Standard Boards.ie rules apply - no advertising, spamming, shilling, off-topic conversation or unconstructive contributions.

This is now your place to talk about Barretstown. We hope you enjoy it.

Barretstown, at Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare, was opened in 1994 and provides a unique programme of ‘therapeutic recreation’ for children with cancer and other serious illnesses.
The children, aged seven to 17, come from Ireland and Europe to take part in activities such as arts and outdoor adventure.
Through their achievements they stop seeing themselves as ‘sick kids’ and begin to regain their own inner strength, confidence and self-esteem - all adding up to ‘serious fun’.
The programme has been backed by leading medical specialists as a valuable part in a child’s recovery from cancer and other serious illnesses.
Barretstown has served over 10,000 children from 22 different European countries since it opened in 1994.
In 2006 Barretstown served 1,381 children and families.
Barretstown was founded by Hollywood actor Paul Newman and is part of the Association of Hole In The Wall Gang Camps.
Each year Barretstown needs to raise €5 million to fund its life-changing programmes.
Barretstown.org It's a special place where horizons are broadened and smiles are even broader.

How do you volunteer to be a carer??? Are there and special requirements to be met?

I was a carer for a camp with kids with disabilities a few years ago and loved it and would love to do it again except that particular one you have to be in 5th or 6th year to do and I'm past that!
