Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

This can be the thread in question, I suppose.

Should it be just for uploading photos on the theme, or can we work in technique tips and links to work by experts in the field?

Other than planned shoots and project work (a phrase I'm beginning to really dislike) about 75% of my snaps would be randomly occurring snaps from the street. Can't beat it. I do avoid a few things such as: I don't like having cars in the shot (unless important to the general composition) and I'm very conscious of what background (i.e signage and shops) is getting into the frame.
Here's a few I like (that don't necessarily avoid the things I avoid).

Street Photography can be whatever you want it to be. There are not rules, everyone has their idea .. It's called style, embrace yours and see where it leads. I personally prefer my 50mm f/1.4 prime on my SLR as I can shoot in semi darkness if I load with 3200 film and sometimes a 24mm.

Some prefer zooms and to be remote - all style issues. It is all art and all subjective.

    Hey Folks,

I have a few questions in relation to the whole street photography thing. I'd love to walk around and snap some pictures of people as they're going about their business but:

Do you ask someone's permission before you take their photo? If you do I imagine a certain spontaneity is lost.

If you don't ask their permission and just snap away what's their reaction? Do people just ignore you or are they good natured about it? What do you say to them?

I think I'm a little worried about being perceived as some sort of weirdo with a camera. It'd be a little unusual to turn your head and there's some guy with a DSLR pointed at you.

When you take photo's of people are you relatively near them or are you fairly 'safe' because you can crop til your hearts content? IE: you're far enough away.

For example thebaz, did you ask this chap his permission? If not you had to have been fairly close to him, what did he say?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,723 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

    Thanks Brian -

Kintaro - I think its a whole personality thing , but its difficult to balance the whole spontainity thing, with peoples respects - sometimes I fail , but usually i try to communicate with the people, I like to feal I can go back to the person - I certainly don't like looking like a weirdo walking round with a massive camera , like Bruce Gilden , harassing people or getting in their way

and that guy at Smithfield , just laughed , he was more interested in his ongoing deal

    Thanks baz,

So do you snap first and talk to them about the photo or just ask quickly if you can?

    Hi, basic question-

How do I insert an image but if you click on it, it'll bring you to the source (e.g. flickr page).

I tried going to the photo page, copying the text below here, clicking on 'insert image' and pasting the code below (starting at <a href obviously) but it only inserts the text then and not the clickable image:
    1. Copy and paste this HTML into your webpage:
    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pacork/3428702254/&quot; title="Berlin again by dinneenp, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3309/3428702254_6021fa6cd7.jpg&quot; width="500" height="375" alt="Berlin again" /></a>

I find there are 3 ways of capturing strangers on the street: when they're captured unaware, when they notice the camera but no discussion has occurred and when permission has been discussed and agreed. You don't always get what you want. Luck is a huge variable once the subject is aware of the camera, you never know how a stranger will react in front of a camera.
    Here's some examples:
    Unaware:

Suddenly realised a camera was on her but no discussion or permission.

Keep your coat off I'll get mine.
I sometimes sit outside Arbour Hill prison and secretly shoot the visitors of inmates as they leave the prison and make their way through town. Sometimes I'd follow them down as far as Connolly or Busaras but the interesting thing (for me) is the faces and reactions of the people that they interact with on their way home. It's as though the sadness is palpable or infectious. The camera is of course hidden.

    How the hell do you:

A - Hide your SLR camera?
B - Not get arrested for 'suspicous behaviour'

I know the area fairly well, there's not much to hide behind or anything you could pretend you were interested in, hence your hanging around.

Use a number of different cameras, all film, mostly point and shoot for outside prison and slr when they move away from area. No zooms only primes used on slr.

As for arrest...well I've a had a few toe to toes with the gardai so I've come to an agreement with them. One that I haven't broken (that's not saying I won't in the future) and that is to stay clear of the immediate area. Although I was thinking of popping down there today to try out my Brownie as I've put 35mm slide film into it and I'm rather curious.

I started by just sitting on the wall wityh camera in hand. Then loitering in the church grounds.

is that not really invading peoples privacy , actually following them around - when the images get released wherever, the subjects may not be too happy

Images don't get released anywhere. Purely private and for viewing by selected others way off in the future. 20 years or more perhaps. I'm happy just doing it at the moment and last year or two. Most of my stuff doesn't go public. Just fun snaps get posted up here and Flickr. Stuff here really wouldn't represent what I do privately.

I am almost ready to get a 50mm 1.8 prime, but am still looking at the 30 and 35 mm lenses by Sigma and Canon. As I have read that an 85mm prime is probably the most versatile lens for street photography, I'm still a bit confused about what I should buy. The price of the 50mm lens is a major incentive, but I would like a prime lens that that can be used for some landscape photography as well.

I understand the crop factor when using a Canon Digital Rebel and wonder which would be the best choice as I intend to graduate to a full frame body in the not too distant future.
Any tips and guidance would be very much appreciated.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 10,582 Mod ✭✭✭✭humberklog

I only use a 28mm or 50mm primes when using slr at the moment Anouilh.
I used to have a lot of different ones and sure something going up to around the 80mm is handy if that's your thing.
I prefer not to be too cluttered these days so just get by with those two basic ones. When I've too many options I do far too much fiddling and fannying about whereas when I've less options I just get on and make do.
I only like and use manual focus lenses too so I've always been slow on the off using something like a 30mm-80mm lens. Brilliant option as they are I'm just too slow, all fingers and thumbs. Dropped enough to learn my lessons.

I don't know anything about digital.

I feel this requires an explanation, if not an apology.

I take care when photographing sculpture and try out different angles so that the material used catches the light as best as possible.

Naming pieces and sculptors is a time consuming job. Most of my time is spent trying to work out the more esoteric varieties of eucalyptus and sorting plant families.

However I managed to name two pieces of sculpture in the past year:

    http://photographedublin.blogspot.com/2008/06/james-clarence-mangan-pedestal-by.html#links

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/anouilh/2583919469/

I'll try to get time to tag the rest.

I don't think that photographers are unaware of all the work sculptors do.

Have you photos of sculpture you could share here?
I spent a lovely afternoon in the garden in the National Gallery of Vicoria a few months ago photographing Rodin's Balzac. One of the best days I've ever had...

the 50mm f1.8 has **** bokeh. very harsh/distracting background blur. u can pick this lens up new for 90euro online, if u cant save up for the 85mm f1.8 go for the 50. the 85 might be a little long for street photography on a 1.6 crop sensor.
and its not just a portrait lens, i use it for everything. amazing image quality and bokeh for the price.

Now I've decided on the 50 I've spent a rainy afternoon looking at the differences between the f 1.8 and the
f 1.4. The second lens is almost three times the price of the first, however, so I expect it should be much better.

Your reference to poor, harsh bokeh and blur is confirmed in all the reviews of the f 1.8. Also, flaring is much less with the f 1.4, so it will probably end with me buying that lens. Interestingly, any of the shops I have asked about this think that the f 1.8 is adequate.

I have to admit I'm a bit worried about the f 1.8 falling apart or developing problems. I came across a person here whose nifty fifty had to be sawn off the camera body not so long ago.
